JOB PURPOSE:
The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) is responsible for providing compassionate, high-quality healthcare services to unaccompanied minors residing at the Eagle Lake Children’s Center. This role focuses on ensuring the health and well-being of minors through intake and discharge medical clearances, medication administration, and coordination of routine and emergency medical care using local community healthcare resources. The LVN will supervise Medical Assistants. The LVN works closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure compliance with ORR standards, licensing requirements, and state regulations, promoting a safe and supportive environment for the minors under their care.
Qualifications
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct medical intake clearances for minors, including obtaining medical history, ensuring proper documentation, and assessing immediate healthcare needs.
- Ensure minors have completed all necessary medical clearances prior to discharge and document accordingly.
- Administer prescribed medications during scheduled med passes and document accurately per protocol.
- Coordinate routine healthcare appointments with community providers, including primary care, specialist visits, and dental care, ensuring timely follow-ups and proper documentation in the UC Portal.
- Respond to health concerns and coordinate emergency medical care through local hospitals or emergency services as needed.
- Maintain accurate and timely medical records, ensuring compliance with ORR guidelines and state licensing standards.
- Monitor minors for signs of illness or injury and escalate concerns to supervisory medical staff or providers as appropriate.
- Provide health education to minors and staff on hygiene, wellness, and general health practices.
- Participate in audits and quality assurance processes to ensure adherence to all ORR policies and state requirements.
- Maintain inventory of medical supplies, medications, and first-aid equipment, ensuring compliance with storage and expiration protocols.
- Collaborate with case management, mental health, and shelter staff to address the holistic needs of minors in care.
- Adhere to all infection control procedures and ensure compliance with shelter health and safety protocols.
- Serve as a liaison between the medical department and external healthcare providers, ensuring continuity of care for minors.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
- Minimum: Associate's degree in nursing from an accredited institution.
EXPERIENCE:
- Required: At least two (2) years of nursing experience working with children or adolescents.
- Preferred:
- Experience working with migrant populations.
- Bilingual in Spanish and English.
- Experience using the ORR UC Portal and familiarity with ORR policies and procedures.
- Previous leadership or supervisory experience in a healthcare setting.
ATTENDANCE: Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in the employer’s sole discretion.
LICENSES: Driver’s License with clear record required.
VEHICLE: Must have daily use of a vehicle without prior notice. Valid driver’s license, access to an automobile, insurance, and willingness to drive to off-site locations, highly preferred.
OTHER: Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred. Must be available and willing to travel to various locations and with such frequency as the business need dictates. Must be available and willing to work nights, weekends and holidays as required to meet business needs. Must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others.
