Position Summary
The Financial Aid Counselor plays a vital role in supporting students and families through the financial aid process. This position is responsible for awarding financial aid, maintaining compliance with federal and state regulations, and providing exceptional customer service. The ideal candidate will have strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex financial information clearly.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Aid Processing & Compliance (35%)
- Assist in awarding federal, state, and institutional financial aid for incoming and returning students.
- Perform verification for selected students to ensure compliance with Federal Student Aid regulations.
- Review and certify student loan records.
- Assess students' continued financial aid eligibility by maintaining accurate records and collecting necessary documentation.
- Analyze daily reports to ensure compliance and timely application of student aid.
- Manage a caseload of undergraduate students and provide personalized financial aid counseling.
- Deliver exceptional customer service by advising students and families in person, via virtual meetings, phone, and email.
- Work with students to resolve financial holds and past-due balances to support retention efforts.
- Collaborate with campus partners, including Admissions, the Bursar, Registrar, Residence Life, and Athletics, to assist students and enhance retention.
- Provide phone and front desk support as part of a rotating schedule.
- Represent the Financial Aid Office at campus events, including admissions recruitment events, open houses, and student orientations (occasional evenings and weekends required).
- Participate in and present at admissions webinars and virtual meetings.
- Stay current with federal and state financial aid regulations by attending training conferences and workshops.
- Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- At least one year of experience in a financial aid office or related setting.
- Experience with financial aid management systems, especially Workday Student, is a plus.
- Strong understanding of federal and state financial aid regulations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial aid concepts clearly.
- High level of customer service and sensitivity to diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and adapt to a fast-paced, changing environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word.
- Fundamental mathematical skills, including working with percentages and decimals.
