Job Description / Tasks / Responsibilities
Is responsible for implementing the Chemistry Program for Radiation Protection / Chemistry Department at a TMI2. Ensures facilities and projects comply with applicable laws, rules, policies and procedures regulating radiation safety. Compiles compliance reports and oversees regulatory recordkeeping and submission of reports to regulatory agencies.
Provides oversight, direction and training to organization staff to ensure all radiation and chemistry activities related to a site, program, project, function and / or facility process(es) are conducted in compliance with established rules, regulations, policies and procedures and to ensure high quality products and services for EnergySolutions customers.
Supervises various chemistry and radiation safety disciplines such as radiological engineering, dosimetry, instrumentation, waste management and health physics.
Manages the development and implementation of training programs for staff on technical compliance procedures.
Ensures compliance with all local, state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to facility operations.
Develops and implements radiation / chemistry procedures for the site.
Provides training for radiation / chemistry department staff to ensure compliance with site procedures.
Manages the implementation of chemistry / radiation safety procedures in response to new regulations at the federal, state and local levels.
Compiles compliance reports and oversees regulatory recordkeeping and submission of reports to regulatory agencies.
Follows organizational policies and procedures and ensures staff is in compliance.
Performs lab analysis and reporting.
Perform sample anlysis using gamma spectrometers, alpha spectrometers, beta-gamma bencg counters and alpha couters
Processes samples using a liquid scintillator and tri-carb.
Stays current on local, state, federal and EnergySolutions policies and procedures concerning shipment / transportation of radioactive materials.
Collects, analyzes various samples required to ensure compliance with the ODCM (as applicable), local, state and federal radiation safety regulations and orders and environmental technical standards, guidelines and policies.
Ensures proper operation and maintenance of chemistry / count room equipment..
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements / Skills
Effective verbal and written communication skills
General knowledge of local, state and federal radiation safety compliance regulations
General knowledge of the interpretation of local, state and federal radiation safety compliance regulations
General knowledge of the principles and practices of radiation safety
General knowledge of, and skill in using, radiation monitoring and laboratory research procedures and methods and instrumentation related to radiation and chemistry
Detailed knowledge of operational health physics and general knowledge of one or more of the following areas : dosimetry, instrumentation and waste management
Demonstrated ability to collect, organize, analyze and report qualitative and quantitative data
Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office products and their use (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) and database applications
Physical / Mental Requirements and Working Conditions
Ability to lift, carry, push, pull up to 50 pounds; handle, grip, and reach above or below shoulder
Ability to use hands and feet to accomplish tasks as assigned
Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend / stoop, crouch, squat / kneel, crawl, twist at the waist and balance
Ability to climb hand-over-hand on ladders, stairs, and scaffold
Ability to effectively communicate; speaking, reading, understanding, writing and hearing clear English; pass audiogram in hearing conservation program as required by location
Basic math, and computer skills
Ability to perceive depth and adjust focus; basic hand / eye coordination
Ability to see close and distance, basic colors / shades, and peripheral vision
Ability to work inside an office, outside, and in extreme temperatures
Ability to work with machinery vibration, moving objects, and slippery / uneven walking surfaces
Ability to wear protective equipment such as : respirator, fall protection harness, goggles, ear plugs, hard hat, gloves, steel toe boots with or without shank, and full body protective clothing
Ability to work alone, work with others, and interact with the public
Ability to operate equipment, drive a vehicle and travel overnight
Ability to perform under deadline pressure
Minimum Education, Experience and Certification Requirements
Education
High School diploma or GED
Prefereably 1 year of technical training
Certifications
None required
Qualification as a chemistry technician in accordance with ANSI / ANS-18.1 standard, “Selection, Qualification and Training of Personnel for Nuclear Power Plants
Required Experience
A minimum of 2 years of experience working in Chemistry / Count Room
