Job Description/Tasks/Responsibilities
  • Works under the direction of the Health and Safety Manager or equivalent. Inspects work areas and equipment to ensure compliance with EnergySolutions, local, state and federal health and safety regulations and policies. Documents safety inspections—and recommends corrective actions. Maintains safety equipment operability, supply and availability. Performs industrial hygiene tasks to include collection of samples for various analytes. Performs health and safety training as required.
  • Plans, organizes, schedules and conducts inspections of facilities, work areas and equipment. Monitors site conditions, practices and procedures for compliance with health and safety requirements, standards and regulations. Selects and implements corrective action(s) and follows up to ensure proper action has been taken.
  • Performs industrial hygiene monitoring to assess workplace hazards including, but not limited to, exposure to chemical and biological hazards and noise.
  • Inspects areas to ensure the presence and operability safety related equipment (i.e. emergency response equipment, AEDs etc.).
  • Records data and compiles it in statistical analyses and reports.
  • Reviews records and reports concerning laboratory results, staffing, floor plans, fire inspections and sanitation in order to gather information for the development and enforcement of safety activities.
  • Operates, maintains, certifies, inspects, calibrates and oversees installation of safety and health equipment.
  • Supports and assists in the selection of safety equipment such as hearing protection, safety eye & foot wear, respiratory protection for operations employees and monitors use of such equipment to ensure proper use.
  • Prepares and reviews specifications and orders for the purchase of safety equipment, ensuring proper features are present and items conform to health and safety standards (i.e. ladders, lifting/rigging equipment etc.)
  • Prepares and calibrates equipment used to collect and analyze samples.
  • Assists operations with Hazard Assessments and Job Hazard Analysis.
  • Assists in the investigations of safety related incidents and injuries as requested.
  • Attends and participates in professional and committee meetings related to health and safety issues.
  • Maintains all required documentation and records.
  • There is no supervision of other workers at this level.
  • Must be able to travel (<15%) to support other sites/initiatives as requested.
  • Must be able to work day, swing and night shifts as requested.
  • Must be able to work independently and resolve practical problems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements/Skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • General knowledge of biology, chemistry and the physical/natural sciences
  • Working knowledge of local, state and federal health and safety regulations and site health and safety requirements
  • Intermediate mechanical skills (manual dexterity)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office products and their use (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to understand and apply health and safety regulations and requirements
Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures
  • Ability to work at elevated heights
  • Frequent carrying and lifting loads up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to use hands to handle, or feel
  • Frequent reaching below shoulder levels
  • Ability to perform frequent/occasional sitting, standing, walking, climbing, and bending/stooping
  • Basic speaking and the ability to hear alarms, radio, and telephone
  • Ability to see colors, near and far distances
  • Ability to work inside and outside in low temperatures and uneven walking surfaces
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment including a respirator while working in radiological conditions
  • Ability to work independently and as a team
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle
Minimum Education, Experience and Certification Requirements

Education
  • High School diploma or GED
Certifications
  • None required
  • Ability to obtain certifications [e.g., certified industrial hygienist (CIH) or certified safety professional (CSP)], site/facility qualifications/credentials and security clearance required as appropriate

Required Experience
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as a health and safety technician
Preferred Experience
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience as a health and safety technician
