The Underwriting Manager oversees the underwriting team and process. This role is responsible for ensuring efficient underwriting operations, balancing risk management with competitive pricing strategies, and driving organizational growth. The Underwriting Manager collaborates with sales, consulting, and leadership teams to maintain the long-term performance and stability of Engage's benefits program.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Team Leadership and Development:
- Manage and mentor the underwriting team, fostering growth and development
- Establish and implement consistent processes across the team to ensure alignment with organizational goals
- Support the professional development of team members through training, goal setting, and performance evaluation
Operational Excellence:
- Oversee the underwriting process, ensuring accurate analysis of data and risk assessments
- Develop and refine underwriting tools and methodologies to improve efficiency and accuracy
- Approve underwriting submissions and ensure adherence to company policies and compliance standards
- Track and report underwriting metrics, providing insights for performance evaluation and continuous improvement
Vendor and Compliance Management:
- Responsible for tracking and budgeting of vendor expenses to ensure cost-effectiveness
- Negotiate vendor contracts to optimize service quality and cost savings
- Finalize compliance language in vendor agreements and underwriting documentation to maintain regulatory adherence
Collaboration and Strategic Initiatives:
- Partner with sales and consulting teams to provide data-driven pricing strategies and insights
- Work closely with leadership to identify process improvements and implement strategic initiatives
- Support the integration of acquired entities and processes to maintain business continuity
Reporting and Analysis:
- Prepare detailed reports on underwriting metrics, trends, and financial analysis for leadership
- Present underwriting recommendations to executive leadership, supporting strategic decisions
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate with internal teams to address escalations and provide resolutions
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, compliance requirements, and market dynamics
- Support cross-departmental initiatives to enhance the agency's efficiency and value
- Perform other duties as assigned by leadership
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Insurance, or a related field
- Experience: Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in health benefits, with at least 2 years in a managerial role. Experience within a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) is preferred.
- Licenses/Certifications: Must possess a Health Insurance license or obtain one within 6 months of hire
- Proficient with MS Office, and Intermedial Microsoft EXCEL skills
- Knowledge of Federal and state laws regarding employee benefits and insurance such as the ACA, Section 125, COBRA, HIPAA, PPA, and ERISA and IRS Benefit Rules
- Familiarity and understanding of Insurance, employee benefit plans and PEOs
- Knowledge of benefits policies, practices, and administrative procedures
- ClientSpace and PrismHR knowledge is a plus
COMPENSATION:
The salary range for this position is listed below. However, you should know that the salary range may vary based on regional location, the candidate’s skill, and relevant experience. In addition, some positions may include a form of bonus or other incentive compensation, which would not be included in this salary range.
Annual Salary Range: $85,000.00-$100,000.00
