Summary:
The Weld and Beam Manager oversees all aspects of operations from welding, machines, paint and prep and material handling operations of the weld and beam buildings. The individual in this position reports to the Vice President of Operations. The Weld and Beam manager manages people and operations, ensures quality, maintains equipment and machines, schedule projects, develops, and maintains welding policies and procedures and maintains the certification process for welders. The manager also ensures compliance with industry standards, other certifications, and customer specifications. Success will be demonstrated by achieving agreed results in key performance indicators through optimal utilization of personnel, machinery, equipment, and workspace. Will be a leader and decision maker for those activities and with the direction of the Vice President of Operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise and manage a team of employees from material handlers, paint and prep workers, laser operators, machine operators, welders, and inspectors. Assign tasks, monitor performance, provide training, and address performance issues or concerns. Consult with human resources and senior leaders as needed.
- Effectively communicate daily production plan with supervisors, team leaders and the tier-1 teams.
- Ensure safety of all employees and continually work with the safety department on improving safety in all assigned areas. Enforce safety rules and regulations.
- Develop high performing teams with high level of engagement, morale, satisfaction, and performance.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide clear expectations, goals, and feedback to all team members.
- Determine the needs of current processes – labor, machines, methods, and materials needed to meet goals.
- Plan and schedule projects ensuring timely completion and meeting production deadlines.
- Estimate the weld time and material requirements for projects.
- Optimize workflow to maximize efficiency and minimize waste.
- Work with the Manufacturing Quality Manager to implement quality initiatives and enforce quality control procedures across departments.
- Maintain documentation of welding processes and inspection records.
- Conduct regular weld inspections, identifying and addressing any quality issues and working with the quality manager on these concerns or issues.
- Stay updated on the latest welding or machining technologies or equipment and best practices.
- Troubleshoot welding or machining issues and identify solutions.
- Oversee the maintenance and calibration of the welding equipment and any other equipment to ensure proper functionality.
- Collaborate with maintenance on any repairs or replacements are needed.
- Establish new processes or methods needed to meet customer demands.
- Read and interpret blueprints and other specifications to determine production requirements.
- Collaborate with several departments from procurement, sales, engineers, vendors, suppliers, continuous improvement, and other departments.
- Be a champion of the strategic plan as it pertains to your responsibilities and departments.
- Foster a collaborative, positive team environment throughout departments. Lead by example always.
- Identify areas for cost reduction and implement improvements.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications:
- Experience working in a tiered leadership environment that utilizes Managing for Daily Improvement (MDI), visual management techniques such as SQDC, Accountability, and CI Suggestion boards
- Extensive knowledge of welding processes, techniques, and materials
- Demonstrated leadership in managing teams, communication, conflict resolution, problem solving, motivating and coaching
- Strong understanding of quality control principles and practices
- Experience with improvement approaches such as PDCA, Kaizen events and A3- projects
- Experience with standard work and auditing processes
- Proficiency in blueprint reading and technical drawings
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations and company safety rules and policies
- Skilled in planning and organizing
- Effective interpersonal skills, system and change implementation skills, strong verbal, and written communication skills
- Ability to meet deadlines under pressure
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally
- Proficiency in MS Office and inventory systems
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Industrial Management, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field preferred.
- Associate’s degree in welding technology, metal fabrication or a related field is required or equivalent combination of at least 3-5 years of education, experience, and training required.
- CWS welding certification is a plus or willing to obtain.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, fractions, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

While performing these job duties, the employee will be working in an office environment and will also be performing work in manufacturing and warehouse environments. Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, dust, heat, cold. Noise level in an office environment is low. Warehouse and production environments noise level could be moderate to loud.
