Mechanical Designer
About the Role
We are seeking a Mechanical Designer to contribute to the development of downhole tools by conceptualizing, refining, and rapidly iterating mechanical designs. The ideal candidate will work independently while also coordinating with the team when challenges arise.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in new product development by sourcing prototypes, tools, and supporting production, along with other assigned tasks.
- Develop and maintain 3D models, technical drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and related documentation.
- Update and revise existing models, drawings, and BOMs, ensuring proper distribution of design documents.
- Support special design and drafting projects as required.
- Conduct dimensional fit checks for components and assemblies.
- Convert sketches and annotated prints into detailed assembly or component drawings.
- Collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure designs align with production best practices.
- Work with internal stakeholders to clarify mechanical design requirements.
- Participate in assembly and testing processes to refine designs.
- Travel to field locations when needed to address customer applications.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Associate degree or higher in a technical or scientific field from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of 7 years of design experience in the oil and gas sector, with expertise in component design, requirement specification, and design development.
- At least 5 years of drafting experience in mechanical design.
- Strong mechanical aptitude to translate verbal descriptions into 3D models and technical drawings.
- Basic knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience working with low-carbon steel, chrome alloy steel, and coatings.
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as casting, machining, heat treatment, fabrication, and assembly.
- Experience with 3D printing is a plus.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM; experience with SolidWorks Admin is a plus.
- Highly organized, self-motivated, and capable of managing multiple tasks independently.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
