General Job Description:

The school nurse possesses the critical thinking skills and clinical expertise to assess the nursing/healthcare needs of students. The school nurse promotes the optimum health of students to achieve their individualized educational goals.

The school nurse performs duties in a manner consistent with professional standards, including the Oklahoma Nurse Practice Act, all state and local statutes and/or regulations applicable to school nursing practice and EPS district’s policies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Baccalaureate degree
  • Valid license as a Registered Nurse with the Oklahoma Board of Nursing
  • Oklahoma State Department of Education standard teaching credential as a School Nurse
  • Current Basic Life Support Certification
  • Experience in a school, pediatric or community setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of internet and word processing software preferred.


REPORTS TO:
Lead school nurse, building principals and Director of Special Services


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide direct nursing care, including first aid, medication administration, skilled procedures and emergency response.
  • Provide assessments and interventions for students with physical and psychosocial health concerns.
  • Conduct screenings for various health factors impacting student education and make appropriate referrals.
  • Provide chronic disease management and education.
  • Participate as a health consultant in meetings when needed.
  • Provide case management services by serving as a liaison between school, home and community in all health-related areas.
  • Promote a safe and healthy school environment conducive to learning.
  • Develop and implement individualized health care plans and services for students with disabilities and/or health conditions that interfere with learning
  • Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases through immunization compliance, as well as the early intervention, reporting and follow-up of contagious diseases.
  • Interprets and maintains up-to-date health data to accommodate students’ health needs and safety.
  • Provide health education to students as instructed by administration and/ or required by Oklahoma Statutes.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written to exchange information, give/receive instructions and respond to inquiries. This includes accurate nursing documentation.
  • Reliable transportation for travel among building sites.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or administrator.


Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature in both an inside and outside environment. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision. Possess visual ability to adjust focus, view near and far objects, perceive accurate depth perception and differentiate color.


Physical demands include standing for extended periods; sitting for extended periods; twisting at the neck and trunk; reaching with hands and arms overhead, above shoulder and horizontally; bending at the waist; stooping, kneeling, crouching; lifting/moving up to 40 pounds; handling objects and tools with hands; repetitive use of finger and hands.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Placement on a nine-month contract (185 days) to be aligned with the current year's school calendar; salary determined by the Certified Negotiated Contract.


EVALUATION:
Lead school nurse will be responsible for completing the
evaluation pursuant to board policy and procedures.
