Job Description
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support the development and manufacturing of lithium-ion cells, focusing on tooling, retooling, dies, and fixture design. This role requires expertise in mechanical design using Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or equivalent, as well as experience in optimizing manufacturing processes through precision tooling and automation. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing, improving, and maintaining tooling and equipment critical to lithium-ion cell production.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Design & Development:
- Create and modify 3D models and 2D drawings for dies, molds, fixtures, automation equipment, as well as finished products and sub-assemblies
- Design and implement retooling solutions to improve manufacturing efficiency and product quality.
- Develop and optimize stamping dies, injection molding tools, and automation equipment for lithium-ion cell production.
- Develop custom fixtures, jigs, and tooling for precision cell assembly and manufacturing.
Manufacturing Support & Process Optimization:
- Support tooling trials, first-article inspections, and manufacturing validations.
- Work with cross-functional teams to optimize die performance and tool life.
- Troubleshoot and resolve tooling-related manufacturing issues.
- Conduct root cause analysis on defective tooling and recommend corrective actions.
- Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives for tooling and equipment.
- Implement and enforce quality control standards for tool and die production.
- Engage in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance tooling reliability and reduce cycle times.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Work closely with production, quality, and R&D teams to ensure seamless integration of tooling in production.
- Collaborate with suppliers and tooling vendors to manage the design and development of new dies and fixtures.
- Provide technical support and documentation
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
- Experience in lithium-ion cell or battery manufacturing preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in tooling, die design, retooling, and fixture development, 10 years preferred. Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver tooling components as needed.
- Experience working in battery or precision manufacturing industries with exposure to high precision tooling is a plus.
- Proficiency in Fusion 360 or SolidWorks for 3D modeling (or equivalent) and 2D drafting.
- Strong knowledge of die design, stamping, and machining.
- Design and development of tooling for high performance composites, complex assemblies, and structures.
- Familiarity with materials selection, heat treatment, and manufacturing processes.
- Provide feedback to design engineering in regards to optimal tooling and processing practices using lessons learned system and the best industry standard practices.
