Boarding Agent
Job Summary
The Boarding Agent coordinates all agency and stevedoring activities to ensure a smooth arrival, clearance, and departure process for vessels and crew members at the port.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate berthing arrangements, pilotage, tugboats, linesmen, surveyors, and other vendors, including delivery of spare parts, charts, and shipyard services.
- Handle crew clearances with federal authorities for embarkation and disembarkation.
- Provide transportation for crew members to and from the airport as required.
- Notify federal authorities, such as the Coast Guard and CBP, of vessel arrivals in compliance with federal guidelines.
- Inform vessels of the current MARSEC (Marine Security) level prior to port entry.
- Board vessels upon arrival and as needed during their stay.
- Process vessel clearances with CBP and agricultural authorities.
- Prepare documentation for vessel entry, including lay orders and other required paperwork.
- Manage crew changes, including off-signing and on-signing.
- Report and manage crew injuries/incidents, including coordinating medical care at local hospitals or clinics.
- Prepare and handle essential documentation such as statements of fact, bills of lading, certificates of origin, and Notices of Readiness (NOR).
- Communicate with vessel owners, operators, charterers, and other stakeholders through phone, email, and fax before and during the vessel’s stay.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of port facilities, including berth restrictions, cargo equipment, labor, transport, and security protocols.
- Provide support to other departments during vessel operations as needed.
Qualifications
- Experience: 3–5 years of industry-related experience preferred; prior ship agent experience is a plus.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Licenses: Valid driver’s license; must meet eligibility requirements for a TWIC card.
- Skills:
- Strong customer service skills.
- Detail-oriented and highly organized with the ability to prioritize tasks and work independently.
- General knowledge of stevedoring and vessel cargo operations.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish preferred.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Flexibility to work extended hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.
- Must be able to travel between Palm Beach and Port Everglades as required.
