- This position will be filled as a Communications Specialist II or Senior based on the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate.*
The communications specialist will work collaboratively within the Corporate Affairs and Communications department and with key internal business partners in the development and implementation of long-term, annual and campaign-specific communications programs that support the company’s vision, mission, brand and strategic endeavors.
Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Counsels executive leaders and other employees on communication and media best practices, reputation management, and strategic PR planning and execution.
- Contributes to and executes a communications strategy designed to inform internal and external stakeholders and improve engagement. Monitors and shares industry news about the corporation and its competitors and identifies emerging issues.
- Works at the direction of the manager of corporate media and web communications and other department leaders to support ongoing company initiatives and special projects. Primary focus will be communications support for the company’s external affairs function, which includes federal regulatory affairs, federal governmental affairs, sustainability and environmental affairs and federal infrastructure programs.
- Assists in the development of executive strategic communications plans including external media opportunities, social media strategies, and executive speaking engagements, etc.
- Shares responsibilities for content creation and management of communications, articles, speeches, key messages, background documents, etc. for all relevant audiences.
- Collaborates in the tracking and monitoring of media metrics to help evaluate the effectiveness of external communications programs and communications, helps shape the company’s executive communications strategy and supports storm and crisis communications efforts as needed.
Minimum education required of the position
- Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, English or related field (advanced degree a plus).
- Communications Specialist II: 3-5 years of experience
- Sr. Communications Specialist: 5-7 years of experience
- Desired: 4 years of experience in professional communications and/or federal policy setting (experience working with executive leaders preferred).
- Strong writing, editing and communications planning skills (AP style knowledge needed).
- Demonstrated experience working with national media, including proactive outreach
- Strong media relations skills, including demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships with top-tier media
- Experience and knowledge of utility sector and federal policymaking
