CLASSIFICATION: W-2 employee or 1099 contractor (based on assignment)
COMPENSATION RANGE: $0.55 – $0.65 per mile (loaded/empty); additional pay for layovers and detention
ANTICIPATED TRAVEL: 90% over-the-road (OTR), with regional and long-haul assignments
SUMMARY OF POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Tractor Trailer Driver is responsible for operating a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) to transport refrigerated or dry van freight to and from customer locations. Drivers are expected to maintain compliance with DOT regulations, company safety policies, and electronic logging device (ELD) usage. This position requires reliable, professional drivers who are comfortable with long-distance travel and time-sensitive freight.
SCHEDULED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operate Class A tractor trailers to transport refrigerated and dry freight
- Perform pre-trip, in-route, and post-trip inspections and document findings
- Follow GPS and dispatch-provided routing for efficient delivery
- Load and unload freight when required; secure cargo using appropriate equipment
- Maintain accurate ELD entries and submit BOLs and delivery confirmations on time
- Conduct basic vehicle maintenance checks (fluids, tires, lights, etc.)
- Adhere to all federal, state, and company safety protocols while driving or at loading docks
- Communicate with dispatch regarding delays, delivery updates, and customer service issues
UNSCHEDULED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with reefer unit troubleshooting or temperature monitoring during hauls
- Support other drivers on the road with peer-to-peer communication and team lifts if applicable
- Report mechanical issues immediately and coordinate roadside assistance as needed
- Represent the company professionally with shippers, receivers, and weigh stations
- Adapt to last-minute route changes, customer requests, or emergency rerouting
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to sit for long periods while driving
- Climbing in/out of cabs and trailers; occasional lifting (up to 50 lbs)
- Exposure to various outdoor weather conditions while loading/unloading or fueling
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- OTR driving in various weather and traffic conditions
- Truck stops, rest areas, customer loading docks, and company terminals
- Schedule flexibility required due to freight demands and delivery windows
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
- Minimum 1 year of CDL-A driving experience preferred
- Clean MVR and ability to pass DOT drug screen and physical
- Experience hauling refrigerated or dry van freight
- Familiarity with ELD systems and basic load documentation (BOLs, etc.)
- Strong communication and time management skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with reefer unit operation and temperature-controlled loads
- TWIC Card or other freight terminal access credentials
- Knowledge of major U.S. highway routes and freight corridors
