The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description Duties Description: Under the technical and administrative supervision of the Section Chief, the Environmental Chemist I will be responsible for the following activities: •Learn and actively participate in the sampling and analysis of toxic organic chemicals in ambient air by EPA TO, and PAMS methods. This will include instrumentation operation and data processing using applicable instrumentation software including Agilent MassHunter, OpenLabs, MS Chemstation, Waters Empower, MassLynx, and Unfi based systems. •Learn and assist with all phases of field sampling equipment maintenance and repair. This will include cleaning canisters, checking and calibrating canister and carbonyl sampling equipment and assisting in field deployment of same, on an as needed basis. This will include shipping and receiving equipment by common carrier and travel, as necessary depending on the given situation.•Assist in the preparation and upkeep of standard operating procedure and quality assurance documents to maintain compliance with applicable Federal and NYS regulatory requirements.•Assist in the research and development of sampling and analytical methodologies as necessary to aid BAQS in preparedness and response for non-routine incidents.Essential Functions: •Good written and verbal communication skills and ability to give presentations and results.•Able to operate and maintain laboratory equipment.•Possess knowledge of environmental hazards posed by various contaminants, using proper collection and handling techniques.•Able to possess working knowledge of technology intensive, mandatory programs.•Able to have good working relationships with peers.•Able to travel to meetings, sites and outside conferences as required.•Capable of dealing effectively with the public, government, vendors, and other outside entities.

Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State.
