TITLE: Digital Advocacy Strategist

JOB SUMMARY:
The Digital Advocacy Strategist will be a key member of ELPC’s Communications team. They will create and execute the digital strategy to raise visibility and activate people around ELPC’s work, priority issues, major reports and policy papers, experts, online fundraising, and advocacy campaigns.
This position will be the digital campaigner working with ELPC’s core priority issue teams and will be responsible for helping to plan, draft, and execute digital advocacy and engagement campaigns across the Midwest. The campaigns will include a broad suite of digital engagement tools and tactics, including email action alerts and petitions, social media content (paid and organic), and new audience recruitment strategies that leverage a variety of communications channels.
Ideal candidates will have an expert-level understanding of digital media platforms with an advocacy mindset. They will have demonstrated success in using digital platforms to activate and engage key audiences. Candidates should have advanced experience working on advocacy and engagement campaigns at the local, state and/or national levels, and have strong digital writing skills, including writing for email and social media platforms. Some campaign or field organizing experience is a strong plus.

Essential Job Functions
- Develop and execute integrated, multi-channel digital campaigns in support of national, regional and state issues across the Midwest and nationally.
- Develop and execute strategies to increase and engage ELPC’s audience, and drive online fundraising and engagement through innovative campaign tactics
- Write and edit email action alerts, social media copy (primarily LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, X, Bluesky and others as strategic), digital ad copy, social media copy, copy for graphics, and more
- Work with colleagues to develop and execute strategies for promotion and awareness of ELPC’s brand, priority issues, major reports, events, and other public education and engagement opportunities related to ELPC campaigns
- Expand ELPC’s thought leadership by helping to promote ELPC experts
- Work with broader Communications Team to provide project management support for advocacy campaigns, including project intake, content creation, scheduling, launch/execution, and quality control
- Execute paid and earned lead generation strategies
- Regularly report for digital metrics and takeaways for results of multi-channel campaigns
- As needed, represent ELPC in person, at local on-the-ground events and produce social media coverage of offline events related to campaigns
- Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline
- 7-10 years of progressive work experience in digital and social media advocacy, ideally at a regional or national nonprofit advocacy organization, public policy group, or campaign. Experience in climate and/or environmental campaigning preferred
- Refined writing skills with a knack for distilling scientific and legal terms into short, compelling copy for a digital audience
- Self-driven individual, with strong organizational and project management skills including the ability to be detail oriented, manage shifting priorities across multiple projects, effectively organize time, identify resources as needed and meet hard deadlines
- In depth familiarity with advocacy campaigns coupled with the ability to navigate changing and fast-moving dynamics quickly.
- Experience with eCRMs and other digital advocacy tools and their technical capabilities as they relate to digital strategy and campaign planning
- Excellence in creating and launching geo-targeted and paid social media campaigns
- Strong interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships and coordinate well across different departments, locations, seniority levels and work styles
- Experience with social media graphic creation and short digital video creation a plus.
- Working knowledge of social media tools (Sprout Social, Unicode, Bitly, etc.) is a plus
- A passion and commitment for protecting the environment and ELPC’s mission and values
- Negligible overnight travel; local travel within the Chicago area to cover events as needed
- Some evening and weekend hours may be required during peak times and events
- $90,000 - $97,500 annually attractive benefits package including an excellent health plan, employer match to Health Savings Account, dental and vision insurance, vacation, sick days and year-end winter shutdown, free gym membership and a 403b employer contribution/match of 4%, growing up to 12% over time
