Job Summary
The Lab Technician is responsible for performing laboratory tests and analyses to monitor the quality and compliance of wastewater treatment processes. This role supports operational teams by providing accurate data and recommendations to ensure environmental and regulatory standards are met. The Lab Technician plays a critical role in maintaining the efficiency and effectiveness of the facility through detailed sample testing and data analysis.
Key Responsibilities
- Sample Collection & Analysis:
- Collect wastewater samples from various process points in accordance with established protocols.
- Conduct physical, chemical, and biological tests on wastewater and other samples.
- Quality Control:
- Monitor and document key performance indicators to ensure compliance with regulatory and environmental standards.
- Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability of results.
- Data Management:
- Record, analyze, and report test results to the appropriate departments.
- Maintain detailed logs and records for internal audits and regulatory reporting.
- Regulatory Compliance:
- Support facility compliance with local, state, and federal wastewater regulations.
- Assist in preparing documentation for regulatory inspections and compliance audits.
- Process Optimization:
- Provide recommendations to operational staff based on laboratory findings to improve treatment efficiency.
- Collaborate with operations and engineering teams to troubleshoot and optimize processes.
- Safety & Laboratory Maintenance:
- Adhere to all safety guidelines, policies, and procedures in the laboratory and field.
- Ensure cleanliness and organization of the laboratory environment.
- Additional Duties:
- Assist in special projects, including research and development of new testing methods.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of laboratory procedures and safety practices.
- Proficiency in performing chemical, physical, and microbiological analyses.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements for wastewater treatment and testing.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to interpret data and provide actionable recommendations.
Education and Experience
- Associate’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- At least 1 year of experience in a laboratory setting, preferably in wastewater or environmental management.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
- Familiarity with quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic data analysis tools.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
- Comfort working in varying environmental conditions, including outdoor field sampling.
