Background : The Environmental Protection Network (EPN) is a 501c3 non-profit organization with over a $3 million annual budget. EPN has a small staff across the country, a number of contractors, and more than 650 EPA alumni volunteers focused on building and defending the capacity of environmental agencies and the communities they serve to address the most urgent health and environmental crises. EPN works to : Ensure that EPA advances policies, budgets, and institutional changes to address climate and environmental injustices, as well as other pressing public health needs Provide pro bono capacity-building technical assistance and training to environmental justice communities, NGOs, and under-resourced state / local / tribal government agencies Train and mentor EPA staff and managers and recruit individuals from underrepresented populations to work at EPA Educate Congress and serve as a critical resource for facts, objective analysis, and scientific rigor for reporters and NGOs Almost 3 years ago, EPN launched its pro bono capacity-building technical assistance program to fight climate change and environmental injustices across the country. Since then, EPN has connected over 200 experts from within its volunteer network—scientists, lawyers, economists, and others—to over 1,500 requests from disadvantaged communities; non-profit organizations; and under-resourced state, local, and tribal government agencies. EPN provides pro bono assistance on community-identified needs, including reviewing permits, teaching protocols for gathering water and ambient air samples, advising on critical next steps to achieve proper contamination remediation at Superfund sites, and more. EPN has helped communities access over $700 million in federal grants. Although some positions require applicants to live in specific geographic regions, day-to-day work is remote, as EPN does not have an office. In addition, there are some in-person meetings and travel. We are looking for this position to start immediately. About The Position : Reporting to the Executive Director, the Senior Director of Technical Assistance leads a Technical Assistance Team of 13 staff members, including Senior Associates / Specialists and Associates of Community Outreach and Grants. This leader acts as a trusted advisor to and member of the executive leadership team of EPN. They will leverage exemplary team management skills combined with environmental justice and / or social justice expertise to meet the evolving needs of a growing environmental justice nonprofit. This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced people-centered team manager to mentor and lead a team in addressing the most urgent health and environmental crises. The Senior Director of Technical Assistance directly supervises five Senior Associates / Specialists, and other contracts TBD. Priority application deadline : January 10, 2025. Responsibilities include : Strategic Leadership Vision Drives a comprehensive national Technical Assistance strategy Serves as a member of the executive leadership team to advance the mission of EPN through our critical Technical Assistance work Team Management Manages Technical Assistance team of 13 full-time remote staff members Fosters cross-functional working group collaborations Develops an annual strategic operational plan for Technical Assistance at EPN Technical Assistance Manage the daily operations of the Technical Assistance and Grants team, including 13 full-time remote staff Manage Technical Assistance contracts Lead continuous improvement for Technical Assistance at EPN, including systematizing internal communication, volunteer management, database management and utilization, etc. Lead database collaboration Support key coalitions / relationships including those working on post-award support (NRDC, L4GG, EPN, and Communities First) Represent EPN at conferences and events Qualifications : Commitment to Environmental Protection Network’s mission and values Bachelor’s degree 7 years of progressive experience in environmental justice / energy justice / social justice sector Minimum of 5 years in a leadership role, managing teams, and at least 2-3 years of directly managing staff Exceptional people management skills, with the ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment Experience working with an executive leadership team Experience overseeing contracted services A strategic and systems-thinking approach Excellent communication and relational skills to lead and develop diverse teams Strong written and verbal communication skills Experience with Canva and / or other presentation tools Familiarity with Google Docs Editors Suite (Google Docs, Google Sheets, etc.) Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish a plus Pay : An annual salary of $160,980 based in D.C.
