What are the responsibilities and job description for the SOI Qualified Archaeology Field Director position at Environmental Research Group?
Mission for position: Under indirect supervision, oversees, coordinates, and directs archaeological crew(s) during Phase II excavation of 11 sites. Provides technical guidance in areas of specialized expertise. Participates in on-site planning and coordinating. Potential for writing and co-authoring technical reports for publication. Project is scheduled for 6-9 weeks.
Location: Burlington, Iowa; Start Date May 19, 2025 Pay: $26.16 per hour plus $5.36 H&W
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversees and directs archaeological field crew(s) in Phase II of excavation and recording of 11 sites.
- Supervises personnel which typically includes recommendations for performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.
- With the Program Manager, coordinates on-site logistics and resolved problems to ensure the timely, safe and effective completion of project objectives.
- Ensures the application of safe work practices by crew members during survey/excavation projects.
- Provides functional guidance and leadership to technical staff for data collection and recording in areas of specialty such as faunal, lithic and/or ceramic analysis.
- Assists on ground with project planning activities, to include identifying appropriate equipment, resources and personnel needed.
- Potentially writes or co-authors archaeological excavation and analysis reports.
- Performs miscellaneous job related duties in the field as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The Requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/ or ability required.
- Education - Masters Degree in Archaeology or equivalent discipline

Experience - 3-5 years of supervisory field experience leading Phase II excavations. Experience in Midwest (Iowa preferred).
- Working knowledge of relevant federal and state cultural and environmental resource regulations (Section 106, NEPA and guidelines
- Conducting/ Directing Phase I field surveys, Phase II testing projects and archaeological monitoring during construction.
- Making significant writing contributions to regulatory coordination and reports is a plus
- Experience with artifact analysis, geophysical remote sensing, and/or other specialties a plus

- GIS-based field data collection, analysis and reporting Excellent technical writing and communication skill
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a team, including as team leader
- Time management and organizational skills
- Ability to work outdoors in remote locations under various conditions (physical stamina required)
