ESA seeks a highly motivated Entry to Mid-Level Coastal Engineer, Civil/Restoration Engineer, or Hydrologist to join our team of hydrologists, geomorphologists, ecologists, and engineers in Florida or Alabama. We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic team member with 2 years of relevant work experience, a passion for ecosystem restoration and coastal processes, and the desire to learn and grow.

Who We Are

We are a 100% employee-owned environmental consulting firm who values diversity and inclusion and celebrate the differences that make each of us unique. Our culture is built on mutual respect, recognizing that our variety of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives leads to better solutions, which fosters our continued success for our employee-owners and clients.

Who You Are

You are an entry to mid-level civil/coastal engineer with two or more years of professional experience designing and managing coastal engineering, wetland restoration, and water resources projects with an emphasis on natural systems restoration, coastal resilience, and flood management.

You can perform basic to moderately complex design and engineering tasks in MATLAB. You have experience with AutoCAD and/or GIS (preferred). You can perform modeling tasks including model setup, scenario modeling, model calibration, and documentation of models and results (preferred). As part of a team, you can support field studies and surveys. You can process hydrologic and hydraulic data to support modeling and engineering analysis in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal guidelines and requirements.

You can contribute to the development of engineering design plans, specifications, and cost estimates.

You have a basic understanding of project management principles and practices. You are an effective team member with excellent oral and written communication skills who can work independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment. You foster inclusion and share knowledge and expertise with more junior staff through mentoring and direct supervision.

You hold a bachelor's degree in civil, restoration, or coastal engineering or hydrology and EIT certification (or the ability to obtain it); or you have a related degree and directly relevant qualifications. You possess strong skills in design and modeling software such as AutoCAD, ArcGIS, ICPR4, HEC RAS, HEC HMS, CMS, Delft, and others.

You can work in a remote or hybrid fashion from any of our Florida or Mobile, Alabama offices and are able to perform occasional field visits through the state of Florida and Alabama (coastal). You have a valid driver's license.

What You Will Do for ESA

You will serve as a deputy project manager or task manager for a wide array of challenging and exciting projects including ecosystem restoration, climate change resilience, habitat enhancement, engineering with nature, and flood & stormwater management.

You will collaborate with other engineers, hydrologists, fluvial geomorphologists, landscape architects, ecologists, biologists, and other specialists in advancing restoration approaches and other project solutions from concept to implementation. You will thrive in a fast-paced, challenging environment and be able to manage multiple responsibilities and deadlines, while working on a team or independently.

You will consistently demonstrate your solid writing skills and attentive listening skills and will participate in client meetings, effectively presenting basic to moderately complex technical information clearly and concisely.

You will perform project functions such as development and tracking of scope, schedule, and invoices under the project manager's direction.

You may perform routine marketing tasks including developing sections of proposals for review by project managers; you may provide technical input and participate in interviews.

You will have the opportunity to collect hydrographic, topographic, and related field data to support engineering analysis and design, including in the field. The position requires work that is varied in nature, including indoor office work and physical outdoor work in remote, rural and/or urban settings. Physical outdoor work may include, but may not be limited to, field work and site visits in all types of weather, traversing uneven ground and sometimes steep terrain in forested environments, fields, along stream banks, beaches and in coastal/intertidal and freshwater areas. Changes in weather and working conditions are common in the region and will be monitored closely.

You must be able to: walk long distances, bend, stoop, dig using a shovel, at times carry up to 40 pounds, load and transport equipment and gear, crawl through dense brush, cross fences, creeks and other obstacles, and walk carrying a backpack. Field work may occur in wetlands and/or on a boat or other over-water device, and may include, but may not be limited to boat surveys and deployment of aquatic gear. It is a plus if you have the ability to trailer and operate a boat.
