Environmental Science Associates
Environmental Science Associates Salary
California, CA Full Time
POSTED ON 3/3/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/26/2025

We are seeking a full-time technical editor with 5 years' editing experience in the environmental consulting industry to join our technical editing team. We welcome a collaborative team member with a growth mindset who is energized by the challenge of tackling highly technical language and navigating amidst regulatory jargon, all in the interests of the intended reader. This position places a high value on adaptability, communication, collaboration, and delivery of technical knowledge and skills for a variety of technical and nontechnical document types. We are open to this editor working on-site or in a hybrid status from any of ESA's offices-or the right candidate may work fully remotely from any of the U.S. states in which ESA operates.

Who You Are

You are an experienced technical editor with a minimum of 5 years' experience partnering with technical staff in the environmental consulting industry to edit various types of documents. You have edited environmental resource reports, large environmental impact reports / statements, planning documents, fact sheets, and proposals and marketing materials.

You are familiar with the California Environmental Quality Act and National Environmental Policy Act as they relate to environmental documents. You feel equally comfortable reviewing scientific or regulatory text and acting as a stand-in for the intended reader when editing an environmental impact analysis.

You are adaptable, deadline oriented, and capable of prioritizing your work to meet changing demands. You thrive in a fast-paced, challenging environment and can manage multiple responsibilities and deadlines while working on a team or independently. You are capable of remaining engaged and communicating effectively whether in person or remotely; you have demonstrated experience using remote working technology to maintain contact and move your projects forward regardless of your location.

You have experience adhering to style manuals and developing and maintaining style guides for projects and clients. You are able to quickly pivot from one document style to another.

You are an effective team member and diplomatic communicator who demonstrates equitable and inclusive ways of working with others. You are comfortable constructively addressing project or team issues, and providing mentoring and coaching to technical staff.

You possess exceptional writing and critical thinking skills, excellent oral and presentation skills, and attentive listening skills. You are familiar with the goals and principles of plain language and can use that knowledge to translate complex technical writing into concise, engaging material for diverse audiences.

You possess a growth mindset and enjoy sharing what you learn with others. You stay up to date on industry trends, new tools and technologies, and editorial best practices.

You hold a bachelor's degree in Communications, English, Journalism, or a related field.

Ability to pass a skills assessment test is required.

What You Will Do for ESA

You will edit numerous types of technical documents and marketing materials. Your edits will focus on improving the clarity, consistency, coherence, and readability of complex technical information, in addition to detecting and correcting errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and syntax.

Collaborating closely with technical and nontechnical staff, you will determine the level of editing needed for each document given the project's needs, budget, and schedule. Whether you provide a detailed substantive edit, a copyedit for grammar and style, or simply a targeted review, you will help to ensure that documents are well-structured, logically organized, and contain proper citations and references.

You will provide quality control reviews to ensure that ESA documents meet applicable standards and adhere to the detailed rules of different style guides (e.g., in-house style guide, Chicago Manual of Style, client-specific styles, Scientific Style and Format, GPO).

You will work closely with your fellow technical editors and the rest of the Publications team to coordinate schedules and process a wide variety of deliverables.
