About Your Role
The Cost Accountant will oversee and analyze all cost expenditures related to the manufacturing and delivery of our broad array of products. This position is responsible for producing detailed cost reports and analyses in support of operations, sales, and supply chain. This position is expected to become the source of truth with respect to the costing of inventory and the cost impacts of inventory as it moves through processing stages and various locations within the company and impacts general ledger accounting. In addition, the Cost Accountant is responsible for developing and maintaining financial cost reports necessary to fully explain standard cost and gross margin analyses and variances to planned results. All manufacturing and delivery cost aspects including material, labor and overhead, freight, efficiency, productivity and price-volume-mix variances will be monitored and explained. This information will support weekly financial flashes, monthly results, quarterly forecasts and annual budgets. The Cost Accountant collaborates with and supports the operations, sales/marketing, supply chain and finance teams with insightful analyses and suggestions for improvements.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Assist with other duties as assigned.
- Lead the development of the annual budget, reporting and review processes as it relates to manufacturing standards and variance cost accounting.
- Conduct detailed and comprehensive analyses of per-ton costs by product and location, covering labor, overhead, product compositions, and equipment expenses, to ensure accurate standard part costing used for sales quote development, annual budgets, forecast updates, weekly flash reporting and monthly/quarterly reviews of actual cost performance.
- Support the accounting and production teams in managing and tracking capex spending and lease accounting, including routine cost-benefit analyses to drive continuous improvement initiatives and project management endeavors.
- Collaborate with senior management to support development of information used to negotiate supply contracts, oversee pricing, shipping methods, and billing standards.
- Prepare monthly operational reports explaining variances in materials, labor, and overhead costs to assist CFO and senior management in understanding performance results and to refine product costing accuracy.
- Develop inventory cost standards, monitor and explain inventory cost impacts to general ledger in monthly operational reporting, and act as the finance lead for annual physical inventory and monthly cycle counts.
- Run daily IFS Distribution and Manufacturing Posting Analysis, reconcile intra-site inventory transfers, and validate month-end general ledger WIP accounts.
- Lead ad-hoc initiatives for product costing, margin analysis, and cost-saving strategies, contributing to finance audits and strategic business evaluations.
- Actively participate in future company team initiatives to upgrade ERP and integrate acquisitions, using expertise developed in the role to improve design of product hierarchies, efficiency of cost structure and business process methodology.
