DSP (Direct Support Professional) Job Description
Position Objective: Provide personal assistance, instruction, assessment, and overall supervision of individuals in assigned training areas, e.g., personal care, vocational development, social skills, leisure activities, educational curriculum, and community-based learning. Assist in developing individualized outcomes, preparing training materials, documenting progress and attendance, and recording behavioral program information in Therap. Implement recommendations in accordance with the Individualized Service Plans and confer with the SSD regarding individual progress. Provides services and support to individuals in all environments according to each person-centered plan. Recognizes natural learning opportunities and uses those to teach independent living skills, enhancing individuals’ independence. To maintain the individual’s home withinestablished standards, including health and safety guidelines, protection of individual rights, and fiscal parameters. Will follow Rule 50, Dept. of Human Services Rule 115, Rule 116, Rule 119, Rule 120, and any other relevant regulatory guidelines.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities

- To conduct oneself in a manner that reflects the highest standards of professional courtesy and ethical practices to people served, staff, guardians, families, and all outside contacts.
Program/Department Development and Coordination
- Assure that individuals in assigned area are participating in all phases of their program, e.g., job readiness trainings, work skills, therapy, recreation, training, leisure, social skills and educational curriculum at scheduled times.
- When necessary, assist individuals with personal care such as transferring, toileting, eating and/or grooming.
- Provide natural learning opportunities, encouraging the person to be as independent as possible, at work, in the community, and during recreation, leisure or educational activities.
- Serve as positive role model for the person.
- Supervise lunch, break periods, arrivals, departures, and other areas as assigned.
- Utilize job/task analyses and/or behavior management techniques when applicable to train individuals on assigned tasks.
- As applicable, provide transportation to persons served.
- Implement recommendations made by the Interdisciplinary Team in accordance with the Individualized Service Plans.
- Assist in developing training materials including task analyses and instructional guides.
- Function as a team member, enlisting the cooperation of both persons served and staff in performing job duties.
- Maintain assigned area in a safe, clean and orderly condition in an effort to provide an atmosphere conducive to instruction and training.
- Develop and maintain an inventory of supplies, equipment, task analyses, instructional guides and training materials for assigned area.
- Attend scheduled staff meetings and interdisciplinary team meetings as requested.
- Assist Support Services personnel (occupational and physical therapists, nurses, social workers, speech therapists, etc.) in implementing and carrying out group or individualized programs.
- Provide or implement instruction/training for speech/language goals and OT/PT goals if applicable.
- Participate in departmental or agency in-service training and continuing education programs to improve skills required of the position.
Documentation and Reporting
- Record production data and other data on progress through the use of Therap data sheets, behavioral charts, worker evaluation forms and curriculum assessment forms.
- Record daily attendance as assigned.
- Report to the SSD any specific needs or potential health or safety hazards.
Marginal Responsibilities
1. Perform other duties as assigned.
2. As a mandated reporter ensures all allegations, abuse, and neglect are reported as required.
Education/Experience Requirements
- High school education or equivalent
- Experience working with persons with developmental disabilities preferred.
- Must be able to perform CPR/First Aid and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Willingness to transport clients in own vehicle if applicable.
