Job Description: Fiber Optics Helper
Position Summary:
The Fiber Optics Helper supports the installation, maintenance, and repair of fiber optic systems under the supervision of skilled technicians. This includes assisting with the deployment of fiber drops, preparation, splicing, testing, and troubleshooting of fiber optic cables while ensuring safety and quality standards are met.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with the installation of fiber optic cables, including underground, aerial, in-building deployments, and fiber drops to individual customer locations.
- Help prepare work sites by gathering tools, equipment, and materials required for fiber optic tasks.
- Support pulling, routing, terminating, and splicing of fiber optic cables, including fiber drops, to ensure proper connectivity.
- Assist in installing and testing fiber drops at customer premises, including ONT (Optical Network Terminal) setup and configuration under supervision.
- Perform testing and troubleshooting of fiber optic systems and fiber drops using basic diagnostic tools and techniques.
- Support labeling, organizing, and documenting fiber connections, including drop terminations.
- Ensure the cleanliness and organization of work areas, and properly store tools and equipment after use.
- Follow safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to guidelines for confined spaces, heights, or traffic zones.
- Collaborate with team members to complete projects efficiently and within timelines.
- Perform other duties as assigned, such as preparing cable terminations, cleaning connectors, and assisting with customer service during fiber drop installations.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Experience: Prior experience in construction, telecommunications, or electrical work is a plus but not required.
- Skills:
- Familiarity with basic hand tools and power tools.
- Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks effectively in a team environment.
- Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in various weather conditions.
- Comfortable working at heights, on ladders, and in confined spaces.
- Ability to stand, kneel, bend, and perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Basic knowledge of fiber optic systems, tools, and cable installation processes, including fiber drops, is a plus.
- Willingness to learn and grow within the telecommunications field.
- Awareness of workplace safety practices.
Schedule:
Full-time or part-time, with flexibility for weekends or overtime as needed for projects.

Fiber Optics Technician or Project Supervisor
