EPCOR’s Commercial Services, Energy Management group has a Full Time Permanent opportunity for a Senior Manager, Energy Analytics working out of Calgary or Edmonton office. As a Senior Manager, Energy Analytics you are accountable for developing energy (electricity and natural gas) trading strategies including the data analysis framework to be used to effectively analyze energy markets as well as developing modeling and forecasting resources to support strategic decision making to optimize trading outcomes.
Reporting to the Vice President (VP) EPCOR Energy Management, this position will lead a team of professionals to conduct economic studies and quantitative analysis of the energy market, develop a complete understanding of customer needs as well as available alternatives. Responsibilities include leading a team that analyzes energy markets, develops trading strategies, and makes strategic decisions to optimize trading outcomes as well as fostering relationships with key stakeholders, including EPCOR leadership, customers, suppliers and regulatory bodies.
What you’d be responsible for
Strategy Development & Innovation:
- Leading the development and implementation of long-term trading strategies for the Energy trading and analytics function and team.
- Driving strategic innovation by identifying and promoting new strategies, tools, and technologies that can enhance trading performance and EPCOR’s market positioning.
- Providing advice to the Senior Leadership Team and Executives that shape the strategic decisions and positioning for EPCOR’s Energy business outlook, considering risks, stakeholders, and the regulatory environment.
- Aligning budget decisions with broader organizational goals and market trends; managing day-to-day budget oversight and approving operational expenditures consistent with Corporate Expenditure and Strategic Allocation Plan (CESAP).
Market Insights & Quantitative Analysis:
- Leading the development and dissemination of cutting-edge insights on market trends, regulatory changes, and technological advancements for EPCOR’s Energy business.
- Analyzing energy market trends and dynamics to provide deep insights and drive decision making for developing, shaping, and refining EPCOR’s trading strategies, while maintaining competitive information regarding loads, resources, and prices.
- Leading industry research, economic studies and quantitative analysis of Energy market to understand its market dynamics and customer needs, identify optimal times for energy (electricity and natural gas) transactions and available alternatives
- Designing appropriate financial or quantitative models and business forecasting tools to develop new or refine existing products and services to increase EPCOR’s presence in the Energy wholesale market.
Risk Management & Regulatory Compliance:
- Leveraging quantitative analysis and data insights to drive better decision-making in trading and risk management.
- Managing risk by performing rigorous analysis, developing risk mitigation strategies, and ensuring strategies align with overall risk tolerance.
- Ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines and stay updated with market rules and protocols.
Stakeholder Reporting & Engagement:
- Liaising closely with traders, risk managers, and market participants to gain deep understanding of the market regulations and ensure cohesive trading strategies represents EPCOR’s interests.
- Preparing presentations and communicating detailed reports to senior management indicating findings, performance metrics, and strategic recommendations.
- Building, and managing strong relationships with EPCOR peers and external stakeholders (e.g. regulators, government officials, customers, partners, project creditors, community members) to support cross functional collaboration, influence business outcomes and resolve risk-based issues.
Team Building & Leadership:
- Leading a highly functioning team; fostering a culture of ownership and innovation through effective hiring, talent development, organizational structure, and considering appropriate succession planning.
- Creating positive momentum to drive high team engagement through effective collaboration, team bonding activities, coaching, mentorship.
What’s required to be successful
- Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Engineering, or a related field.
- 10 years directly related experience in energy analytics, with a focus on electricity and natural gas markets and a deep understanding of energy market regulations, coupled with 5 years’ of progressively responsible leadership experience.
- Proficiency in analytical tools (e.g. Excel, Power BI, Python, SQL, etc.) and a deep understanding of energy market regulations.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with senior leaders and regulatory bodies and to communicate complex concepts and strategies in explainable ways based on the targeted audience.
- Exceptional leadership skills and effective at developing staff including coaching, mentoring and performance management.
- Strong business and quantitative acumen with demonstrated ability to develop governance practices to effectively manage risk, deliver results and optimize trading outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in cross functional teams to achieve complicated goals and objectives.
- Possess high attention to detail while managing multiple priorities and large volumes of data and information in a dynamic environment.
