Job Summary
The Laboratory Assistant/Registrar is responsible for accessioning all patient specimens; internal and external communication and transport duties relative to the flow of specimens; processing and packaging of specimens for the reference Laboratory, and the printing of all types of patient and Laboratory reports.
Responsibilities
- Answers telephone in a tactful and courteous manner. Uses the LIS to retrieve information on patient results for physicians, nurses, etc. as requested.
- Alerts the LIS Manager of problems encountered while using the LIS.
- Advises clinical personnel in the ordering of routine and STAT test procedures in a professional manner.
- Clocks in all requisitions before accessioning the specimen. Checks the specimen(s) to verify that the patient name and medical record number on the tube(s) match the information on the requisitions.
- Checks the computer screen to verify the accuracy of the patient name, DOB/age, account number, and physician as indicated on requisition slip. Accessions test in LIS by entering requests from Laboratory requisitions as ordered, or picks up the appropriate order from the “order entry” (OER) screen.
- Legibly writes the number of tubes received and the tube color on the requisition slip, and staples multiple slips together.
- Legibly records the accession number on the requisition, and places the bar code Laboratory properly on the correct specimen.
- Distributes all specimens to the appropriate Laboratory promptly.
- Communicates with the technologist prior to adding additional tests to an accession number.
- Informs the customer that a requisition must be sent to the Laboratory before the add-on test will be put into the LIS.
- Operates and maintains copier, printers and other office equipment. Makes simple corrections to printer malfunctions and reports printer and device breakdowns that require servicing to the LIS Manager.
- Prints new activity reports, cumulative reports and other reports as requested and/or needed.
- Separates all other printed patient reports and places them in mailbox for pickup by other departments daily.
- Retrieves packages and transmits all specimens being sent to the reference Laboratory, with follow-up as needed. Alerts the LIS Coordinator of problems encountered when performing any of the above tasks.
- Processes and appropriately stores specimens that will be sent to reference Laboratory. Prints all send-out worksheets to ensure all specimens are put in the appropriate storage area (room temperature, refrigerator and freezer).
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- One (1) year clerical experience preferable in a laboratory setting.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Knowledge of computerized lab information system.
- Computer literate.
Salary : $24 - $26
