Episcopal School of Nashville (ESN) seeks a full-time Chaplain to serve as the spiritual leader of our school community, beginning August 1, 2025. The Chaplain plays a central role in guiding students, faculty, and families in faith, compassion, and service, while upholding the school’s Episcopal identity.
Description
This individual will lead weekly chapel services, provide pastoral care, and oversee religious education rooted in Episcopal tradition. The Chaplain will support ESN’s mission of nurturing intellectual, spiritual, and responsible engagement with the world and will work closely with faculty, families, and community partners to foster an inclusive, values-driven school culture.
Key Responsibilities
Spiritual Leadership & Chapel
- Lead weekly all-school and divisional chapel services that are developmentally appropriate and inclusive.
- Organize and lead liturgical events, including Blessing of the Animals, Lessons & Carols, Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, Baccalaureate, and Graduation.
- Encourage student participation in chapel leadership and worship planning.
- Celebrate Episcopal Schools Week with programming that honors the mission and values of Episcopal education.
- Maintain an inclusive chapel environment that welcomes students and families of all faith backgrounds.
- Infuse chapel with ESN’s Portrait of a Graduate values: Respectful, Responsible, Creative, Inclusive, Critical Thinkers, and Lifelong Learners.
Spiritual Formation & Religious Instruction
- Develop and implement religious education programming for students in Pre-K through Grade 6.
- Foster spiritual exploration and curiosity in an age-appropriate, joyful, and engaging manner.
- Collaborate with teachers to integrate spiritual themes into the broader curriculum.
- Mentor students as they explore ethical, moral, and faith-based questions relevant to their development.
Pastoral Care & Student Support
- Serve as a resource for student pastoral care, working closely with the school counselor and support team.
- Provide faith-based support and mentorship to students, faculty, and families.
- Contribute to the school’s social-emotional learning framework through a lens of compassion, moral responsibility, and character development.
- Offer presence and support during key milestones, both celebratory and difficult, within the community.
Service Learning & Community Engagement
- Partner with the Service Learning Coordinator to integrate Episcopal values into student service initiatives.
- Lead student reflections on justice, dignity, and the spiritual meaning of service.
- Strengthen ties with local churches, nonprofits, and community organizations.
- Serve as a pastoral presence in service activities, guiding students in connecting faith with action.
Collaboration & School Culture
- Serve on the Program Team, working with faculty and administrators to embed Episcopal identity across school life.
- Support new faculty in understanding and living out ESN’s faith-based mission.
- Assist with admissions and outreach by articulating the spiritual mission of ESN to prospective families.
- Cultivate a school culture that reflects dignity, justice, peace, and service through every interaction.
Qualifications
- Ordained Episcopal priest or deacon preferred; open to lay chaplains or qualified candidates committed to Episcopal identity.
- Experience in chaplaincy, youth ministry, or religious education with children ages 3–12.
- Ability to connect with young learners through age-appropriate spiritual discussions.
- Strong leadership, public speaking, and relationship-building skills.
- Deep commitment to inclusivity, interfaith dialogue, and diversity.
- Ability to collaborate with staff and inspire a shared sense of purpose and belonging.
Position Details & Benefits

- Status: Full-time, 10-month position
- Salary Range: $55,000–$65,000, based on experience and qualifications
