SCOPE OF POSITION
The Peer Support (PS) Specialist is accountable to the policies, procedures and mission statement of Breakthrough (Episcopal Social Services). The Peer Support Specialist uses their own unique, life-altering experience in order to guide and support others. This position will work with individuals assigned to Breakthrough’s housing program to address housing and other support needs. Peer Support Specialists will work in conjunction with highly trained and educated professionals.
He/she will fill a gap by providing support from the perspective of someone who has first-hand experience, something that professionals cannot learn from training or education. The Peer Support Specialist will assist in providing the assist to completing needs forms to navigate through the complex HUD housing system
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Specific Responsibilities
1. Assist with navigating the community system for addressing homelessness.
2. Complete intakes and maintain files according to HUD standards.
3. Ensure that client profiles in HMIS are up to date.
4. Assists clients in problem solving, accessing resources to meet identified needs/goals, facilitation and coordination of natural and community resources.
Education, Training and Experience Requirements:
The requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
1. Preferred- completed the Kansas Certified Peer Specialist training. If this is not complete, a willingness to complete Phase 1 and sign up for Phase 2 in the first 90 days of employment with a successful completion of Phase 2 in the first year of employment.
2. High school graduate or G.E.D. equivalent.
3. Must pass pre-employment Drug/Alcohol screening.
4. No history of crimes against persons, sexual assault or exploitation and sexual or physical abuse.
5. Must self-identify as a person with lived experience with homelessness, mental illness, or substance use disorder.
6. The Peer must possess basic computer and typing skills, including Word and Excel document creation, data entry, and internet navigation.
7. A valid Kansas driver’s license preferred.
