Reports To: Subsurface Utility Engineering Manager
Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt
Primary Areas of Focus
- Locating and marking underground utilities
Core Responsibilities
- Utilize site plans, area maps, blueprints, and electronic equipment to locate underground electrical cables and/or other underground utilities as required.
- Conduct a thorough analysis of work sites to identify potential utility locations. Review construction plans, maps, and other relevant documents to understand the layout of utilities.
- Operate specialized equipment, such as Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and electromagnetic locators, to detect and locate underground utilities.
- Clearly mark the positions of utilities using flags, paint, or other designated markers to provide clear guidance to construction crews.
- Collaborate with construction teams, contractors, and project managers to convey accurate information regarding the location of utilities. Maintain effective communication with team members to ensure safety and prevent accidents.
- Maintain accurate records of utility locations for future reference and project documentation. Create utility drawings and maps based on field observations and measurements.
- Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to minimize the risk of accidents during utility locating activities. Take appropriate measures to ensure personal safety and the safety of others on the job site.
- Identify and address challenges or discrepancies in utility information, taking corrective actions as needed. Collaborate with engineering and construction teams to resolve issues related to utility locations.
- Provide accurate and timely reports on utility locations and any issues encountered during the locating process. Document any changes or modifications made to the original utility plans.
- Ensure compliance with local regulations, industry standards, and company policies related to utility locating.
- Conduct quality control checks to verify the accuracy of utility markings and ensure alignment with project requirements.
- Interact with clients or property owners to explain the utility locating process and address any concerns they may have.
Skills & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 3 years’ experience locating various underground utilities with Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
- Understanding of underground utility locating and marking practices
- Strong work ethic and commitment to safety
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- CDL Class A or B is preferred but not required.
Physical Requirements
- Required to stand, walk, and sit.
- The position may require a visit to project sites occasionally.
- The position requires a normal range of hearing.
- The employee must be able to lift 50 lbs. occasionally.
- Requires prolonged sitting with 15% of the time spent bending and reaching.
- Must have manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard and calculator.
- Noise levels are consistent with a standard office environment.
