The System Software Specialist at Erie 1 BOCES will have expert knowledge of Oracle PL/SQL and above average knowledge of database concepts in Oracle 19c or higher. (S)He should have a high degree of deductive reasoning, logic, diplomacy, accuracy and sound judgment. Experience/knowledge of Data Warehouse concepts beneficial, but not required. (S)He must be able to work independently in a team environment with past supervisory experience beneficial, but not required. This employee assists in developing efficient applications and resolves potential problems.

System Software Specialist Duties:

1. Maintains the server operating system.
2. Installs, customizes, and maintains all vendor supplied software.
3. Generates, customizes and maintains communications software.
4. Provides operators with training required to make efficient use of the hardware and software facilities.
5. Supports Systems Analysts and Programmers in developing and implementing applications.
6. Acts as liaison between Operations and Programming.
7. Performs hardware and software evaluations and provides management with reports and oral recommendations.
8. Establishes and maintains standards to most efficiently utilize manpower and equipment facilities.
9. Monitors system performance and continually tunes as indicated.
10. Responsible for keeping systems secure at all times.
11. Performs other duties as assigned that are relevant to the civil service job description for this title.

General Qualifications:

Candidates should have a Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in Computer Science or related field with at least 4 years of data processing experience with at least 2 years of programming in PL SQL/SQL. Minimum Civil Service Qualifications:

Must hold permanent status as a Systems Software Specialist, or; be reachable on the current Systems Software Specialist civil service list, or; meet minimum qualifications for provisional* appointment as follows:

A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four (4) year college or university with a Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of data processing experience in vendor-supplied operating systems software programming and/or maintenance; or:

B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two (2) or four (4) year college or university with an Associate's degree in Business Administration, Computer Science or related field and three (3) years of data processing experience, at least two (2)
years of which must have been in vendor-supplied operating systems software programming and/or maintenance; or:

C) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of data processing experience at least three (3) years of which involved computer programming with at least two (2) years in vendor-supplied operating systems software
programming and/or maintenance; or:

D) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B)
and (C).
