Job Responsibility:
Under general supervision is responsible for employing case management and best practice techniques to bring a balanced approach to developing juvenile accountability and behavior change for youths who have been placed on probation by the Court. Probation Counselors initiate individualized assessments and treatment plans toward the goals of rehabilitation of the youths as well as the protection of the community. Develops and implements strategies to support and empower parents and promote positive family dynamics.
Essential Job Functions:
- Sets clear Probation Rules and develops/implements treatment plans for youths and their families based on that individual’s area of need as identified in OYAS Risk Assessments.
- Completes social histories by interviewing youth and others necessary to obtain the requisite information. This would include report writing and submission to the Court.
- Meets with and gives direction to probationers and parents on a regular basis. This includes going to that youth’s home, school, counseling agency, etc.
- Monitors youths and making referrals, as appropriate, for behavioral modification, skills training, academic deficiencies, special needs, and collaboration within the Court.
- Monitor and assess the youth’s compliance with Court-ordered conditions, which includes frequent contact with the youths, attorneys, law-enforcement, employers, treatment providers, the Court, family and community agencies.
- Initiates Court action, testify when necessary, and makes recommendations to the Court.
- Complete case notes on all activities, prepare files and presentations to the Court, and prepare treatment plans.
- Responsible for accurate data entry into OJSS Case Management system on all youth.
- Conduct drug and alcohol screens and/or swabs.
- Maintain all required confidentiality.
- Treat youth with delinquency issues and their families with dignity, respect, and enthusiasm.
- Work in a team environment, while also working independently.
- Develop strong relationships with diverse groups of citizens, who may have conflicting interests and opinions.
- Maintain a professional business demeanor at all times.
- Demonstrate capacity to handle multiple tasks, projects and meet deadlines; excellent organization and time management skills.
- Direct delivery of services/interventions based on the use of evidence-based approaches such as E.P.I.C.S., CBI-CY Core Youth and Carey Guides to youth and families. Complete all mandatory training within prescribed time frames.
- Effectively analyze case data and design interventions for youth/families.
- Any other duties deemed necessary by the Director of Court Services.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice, psychology, social work, or related field. Current college students in their final semester in appropriate majors are encouraged to apply. If selected, failure to obtain the required degree within six months of hire date is disqualifying, and employment will be terminated.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional experience involving:
- Community supervision of offenders (probation or parole);
- Counseling; or
- Maintaining a caseload in case management setting.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the juvenile justice system; knowledge of child development, ability to learn new techniques quickly; ability to make practical applications of techniques and principles; ability to relate effectively and professionally to clients their families, the general public and other professionals in the field; ability to prepare reports and classify and maintain information; ability to handle sensitive situations and maintain professionalism; skills in effective oral and written communication; adaptable to working before or after normal work hours; ability to dress professionally for the position.
Licensure or Certification Requirements:
- Valid Ohio State Motor Vehicle Operators License and proof of insurance.
