Job Summary:
The Neurodiagnostic Technician Registered Lead is trained to operate EEG Machines in effort to measure and record the electrical activity of the brain primarily to assist in the diagnosis of epilepsy/seizure disorders. The NTR Lead is responsible for providing and administering Neurodiagnostic procedures ordered by physicians. The NTR Lead will gather and document a patient's medical history, explain the testing procedure, prepare the patient for the procedure, and perform the procedure adhering to general electrodiagnostic and lab standards (per standard policy manual). NTR Lead is responsible for reporting critical findings to the physician. The above process is to be completed with primary emphasis on safety of the patient, and ensuring a quality study. The NTR Lead is also responsible for maintaining patient and department related documentation.
The NTR Lead will also have the responsibility for not only the EEG but also the EMU programs when on duty or in the absence of the Administrator, which includes accountability for the quality of patient care, the performance of the staff, assisting in the development and management of the budget, and the orientation, education, and development of the staff. Work schedule varies according to department need. Predominate contacts include administrators, department heads, supervisors, physicians, employees, patients, visitors, and community representatives.
The NTR Lead assists in the implementation of clinical protocols, participates in the development and implementation of in-service education, making recommendations for continuing education for the EEG Technologists. The NTR Lead ensures that yearly competencies are completed by all EEG techs.
Facilitate the patients through the system in an expeditious manner and communicate effectively with the Attending in order to achieve this goal. Communicate areas of concerns to the Administrator in a timely manner.
Evaluate the appropriateness of delegation amongst staff members. Assist in the development of staff members by periodically reviewing the care they provide and offer constructive feedback. Identify areas of improvement for staff members and develop plan of action to assist in their growth. Work on coaching and counseling to enhance a staff member's performance.
Insure that the area is maintained according to established standards and guidelines at all times. Identify areas that require attention and follow through on corrective action. Ability to assess, guide and direct the unit in the absence of the Administrator.
Clinical competency is evaluated annually using a variety of mechanisms. It focuses on the population-specific needs of the customers served by the staff member.
Education:
Required:
High School diploma or equivalent
Completion of an EEG training course/curriculum or Completed two years of college or Associate's Degree in health care within 18 months of assuming the NTR Lead position. Registered EEG Technician within 18 months of assuming the NTR Lead position.

Two to Three years EEG experience
Preferred:
Minimum of 3 year's experience in the field of Neuro-diagnostics
Work in an epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) setting involving hook up of studies, monitoring of EMU patients
Hooking up and monitoring long term ICU-EEG studies (can be referred to as critical care monitoring)
Monitoring above includes but is not limited to: reviewing/watching ongoing studies, for clinical, sub clinical seizures, recognizing normal variants, recognizing and understanding the significance of inter-ictal epileptiform and non-epileptiform activity, and identifying different types if artifact and taking the necessary action to correct this.
Observing and trouble shooting the EEG (record) for quality, and making corrections as needed to maintain quality including but not limited to impedance checks, detecting salt bridges
Performing routine in and out patient EEGs
Demonstrating appropriate clinical skill and reasoning when performing, an EEG such as whether or not to perform activations, and optimizing the quality of the study.
Annotating short and long term EEG
Clipping/pruning short and long term EEG prior to archiving
Ictal seizure protocol in the EMU
First aid for seizures

BLS completed prior to going to the unit/ department and maintained going forward

Department Position Summary:
Responsibilities and Duties - based on designated/classified level of the technician
Monitoring/watching ongoing long term EEG including in the epilepsy monitoring unit and in the ICU or other general medical setting for clinical and subclinical seizures and than notifying a higher level technologist and/or physician per standard operating protocol of seizures. Recognizing and identifying the key differences between an epileptic and non-epileptic event
Ensures that all EEG techs have yearly credentialing completed and EOLs completed timely
Ensures all EEG techs maintain credentialing and certifications
Disconnecting EEG studies
First Aid for seizures (basic response and positioning
Performing routine in patient and out patient EEGs
Beginning (hooking up) long term video EEG studies
Correcting placement of electrodes when necessary
Monitoring above includes but is not limited to: reviewing/watching ongoing studies, for clinical, sub clinical seizures, recognizing normal variants, recognizing and understanding the significance of inter-ictal epileptiform and non-epileptiform activity, and identifying different types if artifact and taking the necessary action to correct this.

Calling patients to confirm appointments, and scheduling of studies.

Will be required to work various shifts and take call for weekend coverage.
The NTR Lead is responsible for performing Neurodiagnostic procedures ordered by a physician. The Technologist must be able to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and other department staff members. The EEG Technologist must maintain departmental and patient-specific documentation in an organized manner.
The NTR Lead must be able to work independently and interdependently as necessary.
