Department Position Summary:
Provides direct patient care under the direction of a RN, including procedures, activities of daily living, and operating equipment necessary for patient care as assigned.
The nurse tech must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the Oncology Unit. He/she must be familiar with the assessments and treatments of patients with a cancer diagnosis and with acute and chronic kidney disease, dialysis and kidney transplant. The nurse tech must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient�s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient�s requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the unit�s policies and procedures.
The unit is primarily a Medical Oncology Unit, but will also accept Palliative care and comfort care patients. Additionally, the unit is second in line for Kidney Transplant donors and recipients for both pre- and post-transplant needs. Also served are overflow medical patients and surgical GYN patients. Oncology nurse techs will become familiar with chemotherapy drugs and their side effects.
