Education:
Required:
RD or RN
RD-graduate from an approved program in dietetics or nutrition.
RN-Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Preferred:
Masters degree
Experience:
Required:
A minimum one to three years of progressive experience in a hospital setting required. Experience with ALS/Neurology patients preferred.

Department Position Summary:
Establishes and coordinates the dietary education for Neurology outpatients (ALS Clinic) to include screening of patient nutritional status, assessing of laboratory values and other pertinent medical data, monitoring the nutritional status of patients, counseling of patient and/or family on special nutritional requirements, consulting with other health care personnel (physician, nurse, pharmacist, social worker, etc.) as appropriate. Position will also coordinate with inpatients for out patient needs such as tube feedings. The vast majority of patients seen are adults and geriatrics and occasionally adolescents. Provides communication between the hospital dietary department and nursing. Participates in client-centered case management and coordinates multidisciplinary plan of care.
The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's policies and procedures. This is done through evaluation of direct supervisor by direct observation, in a skills lab, or discussed verbally or written. Competency can also be evaluated by a formal peer review process and/or by self assessment based on objective criteria that is reviewed and validated.
