What are the responsibilities and job description for the Educational Interpreter (American Sign Language) position at ESC of Central Ohio?
Job Objective: Provide access, through interpretive services, to all areas of the general education curriculum that includes but is not limited to; lecture, class labs, class discussions, presentations, small and large group instruction, study groups, and IEP meetings.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Ohio Department of Education License for Educational Interpreters
- Proficient in communication skills including but not limited to: American Sign Language (ASL), Pidgin Signed English (PSE), and/or Signed Exact English (SEE).
- Proficient in voicing skills
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, and members of the IEP team
- Documentation of clear criminal record
- Complies with drug-free workplace rules and board policies

Reports To: Director of Student Services and Coordinator of Special Education
Responsibilities and Essential Functions: “The following duties are representative of performance expectations, however the list below is not ranked in order of importance or intended to be all inclusive.”
- Provides accurate interpreting and/or transliterating services.
- Uses communication methods that best meet the needs of assigned students’ IEP.
- Works with all staff to ensure that services are provided in the least restrictive environment.
- Helps maintain a positive learning environment.
- Promotes effective use of interpretive services in an inclusive environment.
- Collaborates with educational team to address supplemental service needs.
- Helps educate staff about using interpretive services and providing visual access to deaf and hard of hearing students.
- Uses designated planning opportunities to increase knowledge of classroom to effectively interpret material.
- Provides interpretive services when students ask or the students’ behavior in the educational setting suggests they need the content explained further.
- Assists in the implementation of classroom modifications/accommodations as requested by teacher of record.
- Promotes self-advocacy skills for students to take full advantage of each learning environment.
- Participates in staff meetings and professional growth opportunities; pursues opportunities to acquire new skills such as C-Print captioning.
- Upholds board policies, follows administrative guidelines, complies with Federal and state laws, model policies and procedures, rules and regulations for the education of students with disabilities. Ensures paperwork is accurate, all timelines and deadlines are met (annual reviews, progress reports, etc.), strictly adheres to HIPPA and FERPA, respects personal privacy and maintains confidentiality of privileged information.
- Maintains high ethical standards, exhibits professionalism, self-control, flexibility, satisfactory attendance/punctuality, dependability, accepts responsibility for decisions and conduct, promotes a favorable image of the Agency, etc.).
- Completes other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.
