This position provides for the security, well-being, and humane treatment of impounded animals by performing daily care and handling related tasks, as well as providing customer service to the public for adoptions, admissions, and other Animal Welfare functions through either in person, email, and/or phone interactions. This position reports to the Lead Animal Welfare Coordinator.
This a "mandatory testing" position that requires Drug Testing.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Cleaning and disinfecting animal cages, animal runs, floor and hallways.
Records details of animal history, such as weight, food intake and license number.
Greet visitors, answer phones, and provides information to clients and resolves issues.
Enter data and maintains records on animals.
Provide daily care for animals in the shelter including preparing and providing food in animal feed pans and water in animal water pans.
Receive and examine incoming animal upon intake for overall behavior and health; include before mission protocol.
Provide exercising services such as walking and playing with the animals.
Excellent customer services skills are required, including strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to deal tactfully with the public and explain laws and ordinances, which include community outreach presentations.
Observes shelter animals and report signs of analyzing behavior.
Performs other duties as required, including being on call 24/7 at times, to respond to fleet emergencies
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Training and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and six (6) months of experience in handling or training animals; or, a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid driver’s license from state of residence
Must complete the Escambia County Animal Welfare training program within 6 months of hire

Animal care and nutrition requirements
Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, regulations, codes, and/or statutes
Cleaning and sanitizing methods

Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, volunteers, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
Handle animals in a humane and safe manner
Identify common animal diseases or disorders
Handle diseased animals in a safe manner
Assess the temperament of animals
Clean and sanitize kennels
Safely operate a motor vehicle
Use tools and equipment particular to the trade including microscope, microchip scanner, medical supplies, animal control devices (muzzles, catch poles, etc.)
Operate personal computer and related software applications (Microsoft Suite)
Ability to work in harsh environments
Attention to detail
Ability to work with both dogs and cats/sometime exotic pets

Emergency Management Responsibilities:
During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. Physical Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require running, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, finger and hand dexterity as well as repetitive motions.
Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Lifting in excess of 100lbs.
May engage in aerobic exertion when training and working with animals.
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.
