This job class monitors the activities at public beaches to prevent accidents and provide assistance. Work is performed under the direction of a Senior Lifeguard.
This is a "mandatory-testing" position that requires Drug Testing.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and administers first aid
Maintains order and discipline
Patrols beaches to protect property
Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe areas or conditions
Operates light truck or other motor vehicle
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS
Training and Experience:
Must successfully complete in-house training course as open water lifeguard; or, any combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
Licensing Requirements:
Valid Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications:
Possession of an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics (KSAOs):
life saving techniques, methods, and procedures
emergency first aid and resuscitation techniques and methods
beach rules and regulations
swimming and rescue activities
administration of emergency first aid and artificial resuscitation
operating a four-wheel drive vehicle in sandy conditions
administering first aid and artificial resuscitation
communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general
public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
swim 600 yards in 10 minutes and run 1½ miles in 12 minutes
react promptly and calmly in emergency, life threatening situations

Emergency Management Responsibilities:
During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. This employee is subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and is expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Incumbents may be required to swim long distances quickly, reach with hands and arms, and bend at the waist.
