Position Summary:

Escape Ministries is seeking a dedicated Summer School Teacher for the Summer Bridge Program, designed to support 8 grade students transitioning into 9 grade, as well as students who are currently or formerly suspended / expelled. The program aims to combat summer learning loss and equip students with academic skills, confidence, and strategies needed to succeed in high school.

The Summer School Teacher will be responsible for designing and delivering curriculum that meets the unique academic needs of students transitioning to high school. The Teacher will provide a positive and structured learning environment for students, with a focus on academic support, skill-building, and social-emotional growth.

Key Responsibilities:

Academic Intervention

  • Creatively develop and implement a curriculum that prepares 8 grade students for high school, addressing key areas such as study skills, organizational skills, high school expectations, and core academic subjects (English, Math, Science).
  • Foster a classroom environment that is inclusive, engaging, and supportive of students’ academic and emotional needs, encouraging growth and responsibility.

Behavioral Intervention

  • Using a Trauma-Informed approach, empower students to learn new ways to solve problems, resolve conflict and communicate effectively.
  • Offer support to students through verbal de-escalation, problem-solving and empathy so students learn the skills necessary for high school.
  • Takes responsibility for the well-being of students through active supervision, wise decision-making, and maturity.

Mentorship and Program Support

  • Ability to cultivate strong connections and build relationships for increasing levels of trust and influence towards positive outcomes for the lives of youth.
  • Supervise and or serve/prep breakfast, lunch and breaktimes to ensure student safety and wellbeing.
  • Support the planning, coordination, and supervision of field trips.
  • Additional duties as needed and assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in education, English, Math or a related field (teaching certification preferred).
  • Passion for the heroic potential, growth and positive transformation of middle school students to high school students.
  • Desire to work with, and prior experience working with, students with academic and social/emotional/behavioral challenges in a non-traditional setting.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and demonstrated ability for cultural competency.
  • Understand the needs of students in difficult circumstances and effectively relate to these needs. Familiarity with ACES, Trauma-Informed Care, and Restorative Practices preferred.
  • A commitment to integrity, consistency, confidentiality, and maturity in managing complex relational situations.
  • Experience in effective classroom management through strong student-mentor relationships.
  • Ability to collaborate with team members in a positive and professional manner.
  • Must be proficient in basic academic and study skills at the middle and high school levels to provide academic tutoring, re-teaching, and support to struggling learners.
  • Licensed and insured driver, with clean driving record and ability to drive a 12-passenger van.
  • First Aid/CPR certification (required within three months of hire date).
