JOB SUMMARY

The Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) Assistant Teacher works under the direct supervision of the Lead Teacher to provide an early childhood education program for a group of three and four-year-old children in compliance with child care licensing and ECEAP Performance Standards.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Assist the Lead Teacher in the development of appropriate indoor and outdoor environments.
Observe and document children’s development.
Implement and supervise developmentally appropriate activities.
Build positive relationships with children, families, and staff.
Support children’s social and emotional development by using positive guidance methods and building strong relationships in the classroom.
Prepare, serve, and clean up meals.
Ensure the health and safety of children at all times.
Assist children with routine hygiene needs.
Maintain an orderly, healthy, and safe environment. This includes general housekeeping tasks such as cleaning and sanitizing surfaces, sweeping, and picking up toys and materials.
Assist in maintaining all required records in an accurate and timely manner.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience
The equivalent of 12 college quarter credits in early childhood education, OR a current Child Development Associate (CDA) credential awarded by the Council for Early Childhood Professional Recognition.
30-Hour Basic Child Care Training, may be obtained during first month of employment.
Preferred Education and Experience
A.A. or higher degree in Early Childhood Education or closely related field.
Experience working in ECEAP and/or Head Start programs.
Experience with low-income families.
Required Skills, Knowledge and or Abilities
Ability to work with minimal direction from supervisor.
Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with children and families.
Demonstrated ability to work efficiently within a team.
Demonstrated computer skills, organizational skills and commitment to follow through on tasks with a minimum of supervision.
Ability to effectively manage change and prioritize multiple demands.
Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment in critical and adverse situations.
Demonstrated ability to work with people, including parents, social service providers and school district personnel.
Knowledge of family dynamics, challenges, and needs in the target area, particularly among low-income families.
Knowledge of licensed child care rules in Washington state.
Effective communication and writing skills, fluency in oral and written English.
Flexibility in work hours and ability to work under pressure and unanticipated constraints.
Hispanic cultural competency.
Basic computer skills.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge and or Abilities
Bilingual/Bicultural (English/Spanish).
Fluency in Spanish.
Other Requirements
Personal transportation, including vehicle liability insurance, valid WA state driver’s license, and willingness to travel.
Compliance with TB testing, Department of Early Learning background check, Washington State Patrol clearance, and vaccination requirements.
Hold current Food Handler’s Card and First Aid/CPR card.

    Occasional: (i.e. lifting over 10 pounds up to 45 pounds, reaching above the shoulder, use of fax machine)

Frequent - Occupation requires this activity from 33% to 66% of time (2.5 to 5.5 hrs/day)
Occasional - Occupation requires this activity up to 33% of time (0 to 2.5 hrs/day)

BENEFITS

Health Benefits - Positions anticipated to work 630 hours or more in a school calendar year are eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits. Benefits begin the first day of the month following the date of hire.

Retirement System - Anyone eligible to belong to the retirement system must pay into the retirement system. Deferred Compensation and Tax-Sheltered Annuities - These are available to all staff.

Annual/Vacation Leave
  • Full-time, exempt staff earn two days per month. Less than full-time earn leave on a pro rata basis. Some positions may earn at a different rate per policy.
  • Full-time non-exempt staff start earning 14 days per year up to two days per month based on length of service. Less than full-time earn leave on a pro rata basis.

Sick Leave - One day per month is earned for full-time employment. Less than full-time earn leave on a pro rata basis.
Holidays - Staff who are eligible for vacation are also eligible for paid holidays
Employee Assistant Program - An Employee Assistance Program is available to all staff
