We are seeking a Sustaining Design Engineer with focus on Cost Down and Value Engineering to work on its industry leading commercial and residential system solar racking and mounting products.
This is a hybrid position, located in Hayward, California, requiring 3-4 days on-site per week

We offer competitive compensation determined by each individual's relevant experience, skills, education and location. We anticipate the base salary for this position to be between $110,000 and $125,000 annually, if located in the Bay Area market. In addition to base salary, Enstall employees are eligible for either an annual bonus or commission, depending on their position. If your desired salary falls outside of these rates, we hope you'll still apply as there may be other positions that better align.

What You’ll Do
We are seeking a Sustaining Design Engineer with focus on Cost Down and Value Engineering to work on its industry leading commercial and residential system solar racking and mounting products.
- Working within a dynamic product development team, responsible for leading improvements and cost down development projects on existing products as well as new products.
- Working cross-functionally with customers, product management, marketing, testing, sales, sourcing, and other areas of the company to develop solar racking products
- Generating and presenting wide ranging concepts to meet customer and business needs using brainstorming, sketches, quick mockups, simple CAD and other techniques.
- Understanding customer needs through user primary and secondary research, curiosity, and customer interaction.
- Developing and engineering designs using 3D CAD, fast prototyping and cross-functional input.
- Creating production-level drawings
- Collaborating with suppliers on design for manufacturing strategies
- Applying sound processes to manage uncertainties including prototyping to verify fit, function, adherence to standards and defining test and qualification plans.
- Support and managing project through regular project meetings, schedules, cost and uncertainty/risk burn down.
- Strong understanding of the product development / phase gate process
- Ability to use knowledge of manufacturing methods/materials to drive down costs in cost reduction programs
- BS/BA in relevant engineering field (Mechanical, Materials, Aerospace etc.)
- Minimum 2 years applicable work experience.
- Successful experience with designing for cost effective, high volume production methods. These could include extrusion, casting, die-casting, cold heading, and stampings using materials including aluminum, stainless steel, and coated steel (for 25 year outdoor life).
- Ability to meet with domestic and overseas suppliers in person and virtually.
- Strong component design, 3D modeling, and drawing skills, preferably SolidWorks.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate across functional groups and diverse audiences, while working in a dynamic team and project focused environment.
- An enthusiastic collaborative and learning focused approach to product design.
- Ability to use basic shop tools and equipment, and measurement tools to build mockups and prototypes. Assess usability, fit, form and function, and effect on product requirements
- Experience developing and launching products for outdoor use requiring structural and electrical performance over the designed lifetime
- Knowledge in Statics and Mechanics of Materials. Understanding and ability to calculate reaction loads and moments. Calculate stresses from loads applied, and identify the full range of failure modes for a given product.
- Experience with product development related to renewable energy or solar.
- Strong track record in similar roles with a portfolio of previous work that demonstrates candidate’s abilities.
- Construction and building experience is nice to have
- Experience with UL requirements, product certification, and ISO is nice to have
- Ability to travel as much as 20% of your time, including occasional international travel.
