POSITION PURPOSE:
The District Spanish Interpreter-Translator is responsible for assisting school personnel, Spanish speaking parents and students to communicate academic, family, social, and cultural needs through language support. The employee is also responsible for both oral interpretations and written translations for all district-wide Spanish language support.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or equivalency required.
- Previous experience in Spanish interpreting (oral) and Spanish Translations (written) is preferred, but not required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Basic understanding of functions of public school preferred
- Basic understanding of NC student accountability standards preferred
- Experience with public speaking
- Exceptional organizational skills
- Ability to speak in Spanish and English to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments and/or directions.
- Ability to read a variety of correspondence, etc., in English and Spanish.
- Ability to prepare routine and technical documents.
- Ability to write, using standard conventions, in English and Spanish.
- Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions in English and Spanish.
- Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
- Ability to be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.
- Ability to be sensitive to cultural differences among individuals and groups of persons.
- Ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
- Ability to communicate via telephone.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
- Requires the equivalent of a HS degree from the US or the home country.
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles
UPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in providing interpretation and translation services is preferred.
UESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve 18 schools each in ABSS with all related Spanish language support needs described below (one other district interpreter-translator colleague to collaborate with and offer training and support).
- Translate all district-wide documents to Spanish.
- Translate all documents that each school requests to have in Spanish.
- Provide some consecutive and/or some simultaneous interpretation at all district-wide events, EC information sessions and workshops, elementary/middle/high schools meetings for parents and students, public hearings, Splash, etc.
- Conduct Pre-K assessments for Spanish-speaking children.
- Provide consecutive interpretation for parents and students during parent-teacher meetings, intervention meetings, child and family team meetings, IEP meetings, retention meetings, and any type of meeting that requested either by the school or from the parents to the schools.
- Assists newly arrived families during the testing process at Central Office checking students in and assisting the administration of the WIDA Screener language assessments on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
- Record Connect-Ed messages in Spanish for both the Public Information Officer and individual schools.
- Develop relationships with Spanish-speaking community to increase comfort to approach their children’s schools in getting all the help and services that are available to them.
- Be available (either by work cell phone or office phone) to be contacted directly by the parents when they need to communicate a message to their children’s schools.
- Other related duties as assigned within the ML Department..

Work is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force. Substantial amount of time spent standing and/or walking. |
WORK ENVIRONMENT |
Employees in this position are required to work in indoor and outdoor environments, and come into direct contact with ABSS staff, students and the public. |
