Job Summary:
The Continuous Improvement and Safety Manager is responsible for managing productivity initiatives, leading facility improvement projects, ensuring site EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety) compliance, and reporting monthly key performance indicators (KPIs) to the executive team. This role oversees approximately 30 employees, including direct and indirect labor, as well as temporary workers, and is responsible for driving cost-saving measures, optimizing operations, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and safety.
Key Responsibilities:
- Productivity and Cost-Saving Initiatives:
- Manage productivity improvement efforts, achieving significant cost savings by optimizing manufacturing processes and operations.
- Implement cycle counting programs to streamline inventory management and reduce the need for full physical inventory, resulting in substantial cost savings.
- Lead 3P (Production, Preparation, Process) events to establish efficient workflows, contributing to monthly cost reductions.
- Execute insourcing projects to decrease reliance on external processing, reducing fees and improving profitability.
Facility Improvement Projects:
- Lead and manage facility improvement initiatives, including acting as project manager for large-scale projects like cafeteria remodels and equipment upgrades.
- Oversee the removal of obsolete machinery to create additional production space and support future growth.
- Create and maintain a Contractor Onsite Calendar to ensure effective communication with internal teams about contractor schedules, work details, and resource requirements.
EHS Compliance and Safety Leadership:
- Develop and maintain the site EHS Compliance Calendar, ensuring 100% adherence to all regulatory requirements.
- Revamp incident reporting processes, training supervisors and team leads on new standards for timely and accurate reporting.
- Implement the Hazard Identification Ticket (HIT) program to proactively identify and address safety hazards on the production floor.
- Update and standardize Powered Industrial Truck (PIT) training, introducing site-specific licensing protocols to improve safety standards.
Continuous Improvement Leadership:
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives utilizing Lean manufacturing principles such as Kaizen and 5S to drive operational excellence.
- Facilitate and support Lean Kaizen events, ensuring the involvement and engagement of cross-functional teams to enhance productivity and reduce waste.
- Restructure and eliminate ergonomically adverse processes to improve employee safety and operational efficiency.
Operational and Inventory Management:
- Monitor and optimize inventory levels to support production schedules, coordinating with the materials team to ensure a steady supply of resources.
- Utilize ERP systems (such as JDE) to track inventory accuracy, streamline production operations, and improve decision-making processes.
- Maintain accurate records of inventory and assist in resolving any discrepancies in collaboration with the accounting department.
Team Leadership and Employee Development:
- Actively engage with the production floor for at least four hours daily to support operations, identify improvement opportunities, and develop team members.
- Conduct regular team meetings to ensure effective communication and alignment with production goals.
- Maintain a skills matrix and oversee employee training programs to support continuous development and adherence to safety and operational standards.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Production, Operations, Business Management, Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership role with increasing responsibilities in a manufacturing environment.
- At least 7 years of experience in a manufacturing setting, with exposure to assembly and fabrication processes.
- Proven track record of leading process improvement initiatives and achieving measurable cost savings.
- Strong knowledge of Safety/OSHA compliance and experience in driving safety improvements.
- Expertise in Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Proficiency in budgeting, KPI tracking, and reporting.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with ERP systems such as JDE, particularly in MRP/MPS/MES functions.
- Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma Certification (Green Belt or higher).
- Proficiency in data analytics and reporting tools such as PowerBI.
- Experience with automation in assembly lines and process improvements.
