What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Resident Engineer position at ESP Associates?
ESP Associates, Inc., has an immediate opportunity for an Assistant Resident Engineer (ARE) to join our CEI team to support projects throughout North Carolina. The role offers an opportunity to work as an embedded resource with NCDOT. The ARE will work closely with ESP’s Transportation Manager, Resident Engineer, contractors, client managers, teaming partners, and other key members of the ESP team. The ARE is responsible for leading established groups of Engineers and Inspectors daily and in varying construction scenarios. This position may involve oversight on one large highway construction project or multiple small road and bridge transportation projects.
Responsibilities:
- Attend and contribute to recurring safety meetings and ensure safety related concerns, such as inspector or public concerns, are addressed and resolved.
- Coordinate, conduct and attend construction meetings with NCDOT and each contractor per project. This is to include meetings with other departments who work directly for public safety on the jobsite such as Highway Patrol, local fire department members, EMS, etc.
- Verify construction methods used by the contractor adhere to the Construction Manual, the Standard Specifications for Roads and Structures, the Roadway Standard Drawings as well as the Contract.
- Communicate with designers to answer questions from the NCDOT and contractors.
- Responsible for performing and processing monthly estimates for the NCDOT in an efficient and timely manner.
- Responsible for understanding each job’s line codes and how they are to be paid per Monthly Estimate.
- Address concerns related to manpower, project operations, and schedule, including business and homeowner concerns related to construction operations.
- Utilize HiCams, Connect NCDOT, and other software for supplemental agreements, claims, weekly reports, RFI’s, and monthly estimates.
- Red line drawings as needed for revisions agreed upon on contract drawings.
- Responsible for public safety throughout the life of each project.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) in North Carolina or EI preferred, but not required.
- Certified and/or capable of attaining applicable NCDOT certifications.
- Experience in reading and interpreting highway construction plans and contracts.
- Experience in directing, assisting, or training subordinate employees.
- Experience administering contracts.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering.
- Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and/or construction surveying.
- Experience using computers and electronic tablets and ability to adapt to changes in technology.
- Good communication skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractor's personnel, and the public.
- Ability to work independently to make engineering decisions.
- Must be able to have the ability to work nights, holidays, and weekends as needed.
- Candidates will be required to pass a drug screen, background check, and have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the company’s driving (MVR) policy.
