Committed to advancing new technologies in the field of ophthalmology, Dr. Colman Kraff helped to pioneer laser vision correction. In February of 1991, as part of a five-site, U.S., FDA clinical trial team, Dr. Kraff successfully performed the first excimer laser procedures in the Chicagoland area using the VISX Excimer Laser.
Since that time, Dr. Kraff and the Kraff Eye Institute have devoted their practice to specializing in laser vision correction. The Kraff Eye Institute has been and continues to be the lead U.S. investigative site for all VISX LASIK FDA clinical trials, performing the very first hyperopic LASIK and Wavefront-guided custom treatments in this country.
GENERAL FUNCTION
The Ophthalmic Technician ensures all patients receive the highest quality ophthalmic care while receiving medical/surgical eye care. This role provides an unsurpassed patient experience by seamlessly linking the doctor and other primary care functions together.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists with patient care and eye exams, including managing patient records and supporting patient flow throughout the exam
- Performs preliminary evaluations including but not limited to obtaining accurate and detailed patient histories, reviewing medication lists carefully, visual acuities, motility evaluations, pupil and angle assessments, refraction, pachymetry, applanation tonometry, and pupil dilation
- Performs special testing including but not limited to OCTs, biometry, topography, and retinal imaging/photography
- Performs all pre-examination testing with accuracy and attention to detail; takes initiative to explain all measurements and answer any questions the patient may have
- Identifies situations involving dissatisfied patients and acts quickly for resolution
- Performs work efficiently, accurately and thoroughly despite time pressure and patient volume
- Handles and files all patient records in an organized and efficient manner in accordance with practice standards and HIPAA
- Effectively utilizes appointment book/scheduling procedures and computer operation/procedures
- Maintains safe working environment for all team members and patients
- Adapts to various examination scenarios and is personable with patients and staff
- Responsible for maintenance and disinfection of equipment and exam lanes
- Works weekends and evenings when necessary, in support of the business needs (varies by location)
- Adheres to attendance and daily time keeping requirements
- Adheres to all company policies and procedures
- Consistently maintains proper dress code
- Proactively fulfills all responsibilities as assigned by lead technician or ophthalmologist
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- High School graduate or equivalent
- 1 year of strong customer service skills (internal/external)
- Strong communicator and listener
- Problem solving ability
- Organization skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to assess priorities, address multiple tasks and deadlines in fast-paced environment
- Ability to use exam software, point-of-sale technology and ophthalmic equipment
- Ability to work autonomously
- Knowledge of office environment
- Strong basic math skills
PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in healthcare/clinical setting
- Previous experience in customer service, retail and/or optical
- Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) Certification(s)
Pay Range: 19.12 - 28.81
Employee pay is determined by multiple factors, including geography, experience, qualifications, skills and local minimum wage requirements. In addition, you may also be offered a competitive bonus and/or commission plan, which complements a first-class total rewards package.
