What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nutrition Services: Substitute Cook Opportunities position at ESTACADA SD 108?
Our Estacada Schools Nutrition Services team is hiring for Substitute Cooks at all buildings. We are seeking highly motivated, customer service oriented people to help with coverage in the school kitchens. Come join a collaborative, student facing team! Hours per day can vary depending, most positions start around 8am.
This position is flexible and on-call. Set your own schedule! This position includes paid training upon hire. We are unable to offer benefits for this position.
As a substitute cook, this role involves preparing and serving meals in accordance with planned menus and recipes, ensuring a high standard of food quality and safety. Responsibilities include serving food, assisting with the cleaning of the kitchen, equipment, and cooking utensils, and operating the point of sale while providing excellent customer service. You will work primarily with other cook staff, some building staff, and students.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
- Experience preferred with cooking in a commercial setting.
- Knowledge of methods for preparing, cooking, baking and serving foods in large quantities.
- Ability to read and write and do basic math.
- Ability to use computer program to process meal and deposit transactions and to communicate via e-mail.
- Possess a valid Oregon driver’s license, or must have reliable transportation.
- Posses, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Oregon Food Handler’s card.
- Must possess excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with supervisor, staff members and the general public.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position
- Upon pre-employment offer, candidate will be sent in for a physical and drug screen, at District expense. District employment contingent upon results.
- Must pass Fingerprint based criminal background check, at employee expense upon offer of employment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ability to work standing up for the entire shift, twisting side to side, and pushing and pulling for a majority of the time.
- Ability to operate and use various computer programs for meal tracking and communication.
- Ability to drive district vehicle for meal deliveries
- Read and follow menus and operating procedures.
- Communicate with children and staff in a customer oriented manner.
- Work in small areas that require bending and stooping for items.
- Pushing and pulling carts with food items and carrying trays and stock items to prepare food for serving.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to:
- Lift up to 50 pounds
- Lift lower to waist 21 – 30 lbs up to 33% of shift
- Carry up to 10 lbs up to 66% of shift
- Push/pull up to 10 lbs up to 33% of shift, and up to 75 lbs on a rolling cart.
- To twist side to side up to 66% of shift
- To bend and stoop.
- To reach forward and twist on a continuous basis
- Stand and/or walk for up to eight hours on cement or quarry tile floors
- Occasionally climb a stool or ladder
- Adhere to all PPE requirements

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: SUBSTITUTE, ON-CALL
Work days per week will vary depending upon the needs of the district. Salary and placement will be in accordance with the FY24/25 substitute pay rate of $17.45 / hour.
