The Equipment Engineer/Digital Printing SME is responsible for leading both the continued development and expansion of existing and new equipment technology platforms in digital printing, packaging, and process systems. This role with be the technical subject matter expert for digital printing systems, this including inks, substrates and pre/post treatments as well as the equipment platforms for application. In addition, this position will be working with cross functional partners across Global Engineering, Supply Chain, R&D, and Brands.
They will Support multiple business channels (eg. Ecomm, Travel/Retail and In-Store) by being the innovation steward for the equipment, ensuring all aspects meet or exceed the quality, creative and product delivery requirements within a managed timeline and cost objective.
Innovation Steward
- Understand that the equipment innovation and technology development enables rapid creation and development of product innovations. Represent the culture and DNA of Innovation Engineering and Global Engineering.
- Experience in inventing, developing, and creating intellectual property around ownable machine innovation
- Lead and support global late stage digital printing projects with cross functional teams to drive forward the implementation of new capabilities which builds agility into our Supply Chain to enable Brands to drive increased market share at the right cost. Ensure capabilities are scalable across all Regions.
Equipment Concept Feasibility
- Drive innovation by leading development of new equipment systems concepts, technologies and delivery systems to support new Marketing, Product Development and Design ideas.
- Search new applicable technologies both within and outside our industry in order to continuously evaluate best practice and support product innovation.
- Drive value realization by researching the latest digital printing technologies and/or new ways to apply existing technologies both within and outside our industry.
- Improve and investigate ways to enhance existing capability gaps with innovation and integration of new updates and capabilities.
- Provide comprehensive feasibility with data of each concept or equipment solution that defines function, manufacturability, component cost, tooling estimates, preliminary development lead time, risk and global consistency.
Project Management
- Support the Strategic Management Initiatives by leading all aspects of the development process.
- Technical Feasibility.
- Equipment systems outline development.
- Equipment Systems costing specifications and technical profiles.
- Supplier recommendation /selection.
- Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (Pre-Design Turnover and Post Business Award).
- Suggest equipment strategy to support both preliminary forecast and weekly rate of production requirements.
- Build business case for moving forward with technologies by working closely with a cross function team with input
- Define, design, develop technology and act as the main technical lead for new to the world/innovation driven capital projects.
- Create equipment URS, develop a protypes and systems, to test and conduct DOE to confirm that the design fits the application and URS, source vendors and suppliers, build purchase agreements for the equipment, create technical guidebooks and lead the equipment qualification plans.
- Build value analysis into every new development ensuring the construction and design provides the most cost effective way to achieve design criteria but also provide the best function and quality.
- Manage projects through Technical Proof of Manufacturability to ensure design and construction meets all Estee Lauder engineering requirements.
- Develop and implement equipment test plans for all projects.
- Work with Engineering Excellence, Manufacturing and Quality Engineering to define specifications, design criteria and defect ranges to ensure optimal process flow from manufacture of components through filling and assembly.
- Develop equipment specifications and validate that technical drawings clearly identify all aspects required to define the system.
- Ensure all projects are completed and meet the intended design, quality, cost, functionality, and manufacturability objectives.
- Ensure equipment systems are operating efficiently at optimal rate of production.
- Ensure that equipment systems meet the needs of the Brand, corporation, Regulatory and Environmental Legislation, and consumer safety.
- Keep informed through colleagues, vendors, journals, professional affiliations, and seminars of new materials, processes, and procedures.
Timeline Management
- Build and/or support the creation of project plans/timelines working with key functional groups; Ensure effective communication strategies on reporting KPI’s and project status to stakeholders and sponsors is established
- Support Global Brand Supply Chain (GBSC) and Global Supplier Relations (GSR) with equipment systems development schedules and identify risks or ways to mitigate risks to support a component availability requirement.
- Identify and inform GBSC and GSR of any risks and or delays during the course of development.
- Establish workload priorities to ensure all projects are managed within expected due dates.
- Ensure all projects are completed and meet the intended design, quality, cost, risk, sustainability, functionality, and manufacturability objectives and meets ELC guidelines.
Direct and Indirect Management
- Communicate and work closely with all development groups including Marketing, Product Development, R&D, internal plant teams, QA, Procurement, Packaging ,artwork & creative teams.
- Work with key customers to generate outlines efficiently and processes correctly and effectively.
- Work with external suppliers and vendors to develop detailed engineering designs, analysis and custom solutions.
- Work with GBSC and GSR to manage specific project development and provide detail analysis on risk when required.
- Build and cultivate relationships with Global Manufacturing and Manufacturing Engineering.
Digital Printing Steward specific responsibilities:
- As the EL SME on digital printing you will also support as required:
- Execute feasibility, development, available operating windows (eg. Equipment, packaging, inks and testing), and offer troubleshooting for digital printing on regional & global programs and packages across all ELC brands.
- Develop and maintain working relationships with vendors and internal groups as required to understand testing queue, artwork requirements, and upcoming programs.
- Create internal guides and process for training and sharing details throughout the global network.
- Interface with various teams around the globe to execute programs, develop decorations, and troubleshoot issues
- Understand and generate hypothesis for material compatibility. Partner with the materials testing team to track results and make accurate predictions.
Qualifications
- Direct Experience:
- Experience in cosmetic equipment or regulated equipment development.
- Concentrated experience in regulated equipment industries (ie. Food, Pharma, Cosmetics, etc…)
- Proficiency in computer systems including 3D Design Systems and Analysis (SolidWorks preferred), MS Excel, Word, Outlook and Timeline management systems.
- Experience in manufacturing process and equipment development.
- Demonstrated experience with fundamental machine design and engineering safety guards and systems
- Experience in manufacturing of regulated products involving the need for traceability and drug reconciliation.
- Technical Competency
- Analysis of geometric objects in 2 and 3 dimensions including understanding of clearances, fit and finish of packaging components and subcomponents.
- Comprehensive knowledge of materials used in the construction and manufacturing of primary, secondary and tertiary packaging and equipment including knowledge of decorating techniques and materials .

- Experience in equipment engineering and leading capital projects
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes in relation to how it would impact the design/functionality of the package
