DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for performing nursing services in the care and treatment of residents. Direct supervision is received from a Charge Nurse. Supervision may be exercised over Nursing Assistants and unit helpers. Does related work as required.

- Assists new residents in adjusting to unit, philosophy and goals;
- Report to Charge Nurse any accident or change of condition of resident and documents on progress notes in chart;
- Discusses clinical issues regarding resident care with Charge Nurse;
- Works as a member of the interdisciplinary team to Assist with preparation, implementation and continuing evaluation of the care plan;
- Observes, records and reports progress or any change in resident's condition;
- Updates the care plan as needed;
- Carries out therapeutic treatments;
- Administers and dispenses medications (with exception of I.V.) to residents, observing for side effects and effectiveness;
- Secures/accounts for control drugs;
- Maintains nursing care and administrative records and reports;
- Attends staff meetings and in-service programs.
- Working knowledge of current nursing practice;
- Skill in the application of current practical nursing procedures and techniques of resident care;
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships;
- Dependability, resourcefulness, good observation skills and professionalism;
- Ability to operate medical equipment (e.g., suction machine, oxygen units, vaporizer);
- Ability to maintain detailed records and prepare reports;
- Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position
- Completion of a course of study approved by the New York State Education Department as qualifying for Licensed Practical Nurse and licensure to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in New York State; or
- Completion of a course of study approved by the New York State Education Department as qualifying for Licensed Practical Nurse and a limited permit * to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in New York State. Possession of license within six months of appointment.
