ENGINEERING MANAGER, NATIVE (IOS/ANDROID)
Full-time, Remote-eligible (US, Hungary, Poland, Peru, and the possibility of other EU nations)
HOW YOU WILL IMPACT THE BIG PICTURE:
As Engineering Manager, Native App (iOS, Android) you are responsible for leading the development, delivery, and sustainment of all EWTN mobile applications across iOS and Android platforms. You will be required to have a blend of hands-on technical expertise and strong leadership capabilities to drive innovation, optimize performance, and ensure seamless user experiences.
As a technical leader, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams—including Product, Design, Security, and Compliance—to align engineering solutions with EWTN’s strategic objectives. You will also be responsible for managing internal and vendor-led engineering teams, ensuring high-quality software development, and maintaining compliance with regulatory and security standards.
You will not only bring technical expertise but also a passion for EWTN’s mission. Understanding and supporting the Catholic faith and its values will be integral, ensuring that the content and technology developed align with EWTN’s commitment to evangelization and faith-based media.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
- Lead a growing team of engineers, with the possibility of augmenting the team with remote contractors as needed.
- Oversee the end-to-end lifecycle of mobile app development, from initial design to production deployment and post-launch support.
- Define and implement best practices for CI/CD pipelines using industry-standard tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI, CircleCI).
- Ensure app stability, performance, and security by conducting code reviews, implementing monitoring solutions, and enforcing development best practices.
- Act as the primary liaison between engineering teams, product managers, and executive stakeholders to ensure technical alignment with business goals.
- Drive architecture decisions, including buy vs. build assessments, third-party integrations, and future scalability.
- Partner with Security and Compliance teams to ensure adherence to legal and regulatory requirements (GDPR, ADA, data privacy).
- Manage vendor relationships, including selecting and evaluating external development partners.
- Establish and track KPIs related to application performance, uptime, user engagement, and release velocity.
- Own the Annual Operating Planning and Long-Term Budget and Capital Planning for native app development.
ABOUT YOU:
Technical Expertise
Our stack includes the following technologies, and you will have hands-on development experience with some of them, as well as experience managing teams working with most of them:
- Languages & Frameworks:
- React Native
- Swift (iOS) and/or Kotlin (Android)
- Infrastructure & Architecture:
- RESTful API development and integration
- Cloud platforms (AWS, Firebase, or Azure)
- Microservices and composable architectures
- Observability frameworks (logging, transaction tracing, failure handling patterns)
- CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitLab CI, Bitrise, Fastlane)
Leadership & Management
- You have a proven ability to manage and mentor engineering teams, fostering a culture of innovation and technical excellence.
- You have strong project management skills with experience leading complex technical initiatives.
- You have experience collaborating with cross-functional teams to align engineering strategies with business objectives.
- You have vendor management experience, including contract negotiation, performance assessment, and budget oversight.
UX/UI & Product Collaboration
- You have experience working closely with UX/UI teams to implement high-quality, user-friendly interfaces.
- You have familiarity with usability testing, A/B testing, and iterative development cycles.
- You have the ability to balance user experience improvements with technical feasibility and business constraints.
Metrics & Performance Tracking
- You have a demonstrated ability to define and track engineering KPIs, including: performance, deployment efficiency, system reliability, and user engagement
PREFERRED:
- You have 5 years of hands-on experience in mobile app development, with at least 3 years in a leadership or managerial role.
- You have experience with analytics platforms such as Firebase Analytics or Mixpanel.
- You have knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG, ADA compliance) for mobile apps.
- You have a passion for EWTN’s mission and familiarity with Catholic teachings.
