STAFF REPORTER
Full-time, onsite in Washington, DC (not remote-eligible)
HOW YOU WILL IMPACT THE BIG PICTURE:
The Staff Reporter assists the Catholic News Agency’s (CNA) editors by quickly researching, contacting sources, and writing articles in accordance with CNA’s style and mission. The reporter should be able to adapt content for audio or video platforms and be capable of posting on social media to optimize headlines and posts for maximum audience reach.
WHAT WILL YOU DO:
- Produces original news for the Catholic News Agency by researching topics, contacting relevant sources, conducting interviews, and writing articles.
- Generates new story and article ideas and pitches to editors.
- Obtains relevant photos, graphics, or videos to accompany the story for website publication and social media posts.
- Conducts research, consults experts for background, develops a network of sources and contacts, and conducts interviews as appropriate.
- Completes quick write-ups as assigned, often under short deadlines.
- Adapts content to audio or video platforms.
- Helps with weekend writing, editing, and posting when necessary; attends meetings/calls and collaborates with the broader News team as required.
- May post on social media to develop brand identity and audience—collaborates with an assigned member of the EWTN News Digital team to optimize original stories on social media platforms.
- Other duties as assigned.
ABOUT YOUT:
- You have a minimum of 2-3 years of prior experience in journalism or communications, with emphasis on newswriting for digital platforms; prior newsroom experience is preferred.
- You possess strong writing skills and knowledge of journalistic style and ethics.
- You are a practicing Catholic with demonstrated understanding of the Catholic Church and relevant topics and how it relates to EWTN News’ Mission, Vision, and Values.
- You have excellent interpersonal skills and ability to use messaging and email platforms to collaborate with teams.
- You consistently demonstrate a meticulous level of attention to detail.
- You are self-motivated and flexible to adjust quickly to changing situations and deadlines.
- You possess the proven ability to meet deadlines as assigned, prioritize efficiently, multi-task at a high level.
- You are proficient writing in the English language, with firm grasp on grammar, usage, and syntax.
- You possess strong technical skills such as proficiency with Microsoft Office and web-based applications, the use of a web content management system, intermediate skills in photo editing, and working knowledge of social media platforms, posting, and optimization.
- You are able to work a flexible schedule to meet news deadlines as necessary and are willing and able to travel domestically for on-the-ground reporting in consideration of news coverage.
- You hold a bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or other relevant field.
