The Fieldston Summer Academic Program (FSAP) offers individualized instruction in Mathematics, Science, History, and English Language Arts to students entering 9th and 10th grades. Whether the student is at the top of his, her, or their class or has room to improve, FSAP provides an informative, yet fun learning environment for students preparing for the upcoming school year. Small group settings are designed to help students strengthen skills and expand their knowledge. Students will gain insight on how to best navigate and access the resources available to them in the upper school from experienced mentors who are 11th and 12th graders and recent graduates. Most mentors are alums of the FSAP program.
All of the instructors are members of Fieldston's talented faculty who are devoted to helping students succeed. In addition to the academic portion of the program, there will be three exciting weekly field trips or field days around the city.
Position Summary
The Ethical Culture Fieldston School seeks a Biology/9th-grade Science Teacher for the Fieldston Summer Academic Program. The 9th-grade Science Teacher should currently be employed or formerly have been employed as Upper School faculty. This person would also need to be available for the entire summer session and attend required curriculum and program planning meetings in the spring.
Specific responsibilities of the role will include the following:
- Teaching the Biology/9th-grade Science component of FSAP;
- Building upon the current Science curriculum (in anticipation of the 9th-grade Science curriculum);
- Having a collaborative approach with other colleagues, particularly the Chemistry/10th-grade Science Teacher including sharing resources and communicating about curriculum and students;
- Attending curricular planning sessions in April, May & June before the program begins;
- Attending all days of the FSAP program and brief post-dismissal day staff meetings during the program;
- Communicating regularly with their supervisor and sometimes other teachers and FSAP Mentor;
- Keeping a record of student progress, attendance, activity, behavior, and injuries/accidents;
- Submitting a short record evaluation of student progress by the end of the program;
- Appropriately addressing student behavioral issues and other challenges that may arise in order to maintain a safe environment and a sense of calm in such situations;
- Participating in all FSAP activities;
- Providing quality supervision in cohorts with teachers and FSAP supervisor;
- Performing other related projects and duties as needed and assigned.
