Job Title: Director of Nursing

Reports To: Executive Director

FLSA Status: Exempt


 

SUMMARY 

The director of nursing care at The Prairie that manages and trains nursing staff and designs nursing and medication management programs.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  1. Ensuring safe, orderly, and therapeutic physical environment for clients.
  2. Training and management of staff nurses and nurse practitioners 
  3. Assist patients with activities of daily living and establishing and maintaining good health by using effective, therapeutic communication techniques.
  4. Facilitate patients’ participation in therapeutic activities and groups.
  5. Facilitating H&P upon admission for each client in consultation with Medical Director where indicated
  6. Developing and initiating the nursing care plan
  7. Developing and implementing nursing and medication management policies and procedures
  8. Facilitating therapeutic groups
  9. Providing clear and complete client documentation and auditing nursing staff documentation for thoroughness
  10. Implementing physician orders
  11. Availability for consultation after hours and returns telephone calls/pages within a ten-minute time frame
  12. Administering medication as prescribed
  13. Ensures that narcotics are counted daily and logged appropriately
  14. Meeting regularly with medical staff to discuss client treatment
  15. Providing assessments of medical problems as needed
  16. Performing primary first aid and determining need for physician notification
  17. Consulting with the physician and psychiatrist to ensure appropriate medical interventions
  18. Meeting with each client on a weekly basis
  19. Responsibility for carrying out any orders received from the physician and psychiatrist, and reporting information to the Program Director and Facility
  20. Understanding the therapeutic process and confidentiality laws, and having strong knowledge of professional ethics
  21. Demonstrating leadership abilities, with an ability to communicate with persons from all educational and cultural backgrounds
  22. Demonstrating tact, initiative, resourcefulness, a professional manner, enthusiasm, and a non-judgmental attitude
  23. Responsible for client case management issues as they may relate to delivery of substance abuse treatment
  24. Attends staff meetings as scheduled and as needed. 
  25. Is a contributing member of the treatment team. 
  26. Maintains client confidentiality. 
  27. Protects client's rights. 


QUALIFICATIONS  

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. If in recovery, must have two years of sobriety/recovery and be actively working a recovery program.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

Bachelors of Science in Nursing Preferred. Associates Degree in Nursing Required.  Five years of experience preferred as preferred in an acute care adult behavioral health setting. 2 Years of nurse management in a behavioral health setting required.  Active RN License in State of Texas required.


LANGUAGE SKILLS 

Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, long correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write complex correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Must be able to navigate a computer and use and windows based operating system.  Must be able to navigate the agency electronic medical record.


REASONING ABILITY 

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete and abstract variables in all situations.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  Must be professional in appearance and demeanor.
