INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE I & II – SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER
Responsibility:
Under the supervision of the Special Education program teacher, to perform a variety of sign interpreting assignments for students and teachers; to tutor and provide assistance for students with hearing problems; to assist teaching staff with the preparation of classroom and teaching materials for hearing impaired students; to assist with the instruction and supervision of students; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Instructional Aide I – Sign Language Interpreter
This is the entry, training and first working level class in the Instructional Aide – Sign Language Interpreter class series. Employees will work under relatively close supervision while learning the job assignments, methods and policies of the Eureka Union School District’s special education programs. When familiarity with job assignments has been demonstrated, incumbents can expect to work with independence while providing assistance to students.
Instructional Aide II – Sign Language Interpreter
This is the advanced working level classification for employees who have achieved the requisite advanced education or been with the District in a teaching assistant capacity providing a broad range of assistance with classroom activities and providing input in the planning and achieving of educational objectives developed by certificated staff.
Essential Functions:
1.Assists with communication between teachers and hearing impaired students through the use of manually coded English and/or American Sign Language.
2.Interprets students’ and teachers’ classroom work, test responses, recitations, and reports into a form understood by all involved persons.
3.Interprets films, records, tapes and other presentations using sign language.
4. Accompanies students on field trips.
5.Monitors students hearing enhancement equipment.
6.Administers and corrects tests.
7.Assists with the supervision and guidance of students.
8.Checks students’ progress and assists with individual work assignments.
9.Prepares instructional and classroom materials.
10. Participates in Individual Education Plan meetings.
11. Assists with evaluating student progress and reviews of skill development.
12. Researches sign language choice for subject matter vocabulary.
13. Maintains classroom discipline and security.
14. Assists with maintaining clean, neat, and orderly classroom facilities.
15. Requisitions, receives and inventories supplies.
16. Assists with developing communication skills, socialization, and playground skills.
17. Maintains confidentiality to protect privacy of students, families, and staff.
Duties/Responsibilities:
1.Observe classroom and individual activities and report significant developments to the teacher.
2.Periodically meet with teacher to discuss program continuation or changes, student behaviors and achievements, or program in general.
3.Order/prepare materials and supplies under guidance of Special Education teacher.
4.Assist teacher in planning strategies and materials useful for individual students.
5.Assists students with use of adaptive devices, such as communication boards or computers.
6.Anticipates the need of hearing disabled students and provides necessary assistance.
7.Perform other duties as assigned by the teacher.
Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
Instructional Aide I – Sign Language Interpreter
American Sign Language, Manually Coded English systems, and Cued
Speech.
Basic behavior patterns and problems of hearing impaired students.
Needs and behaviors of students with various racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
Effective methods and techniques for assisting with the skill development and educational progress of hearing impaired students.
Classroom procedures and techniques.
Instructional methods and techniques.
Proper English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Mathematics.
Instructional Aide II – Sign Language Interpreter
The above, plus:
Comprehensive knowledge of the general child development behavior patterns, and problems of normal and disabled children and youth.
Comprehensive knowledge of the specific behavior patterns, problems, and needs of students in classes to which assigned.
Instructional methods and techniques generally applicable to working with disabled children and youth.
Effective instructional methods and techniques specifically applicable to students in program to which assigned.
Ability to:
Instructional Aide I – Sign Language Interpreter
Communicate effectively in SEE Sign Language, American Sign
Language, or other appropriate languages for hearing impaired persons.
Gain the confidence of, work effectively with, and maintain discipline
among hearing impaired students.
Maintain an understanding of the problems of children in Special
Education programs.
Effectively apply a variety of instructional methods and techniques for
hearing impaired students.
Monitor and insure proper functioning of equipment designed to assist
student hearing.
Assist with learning activities.
Perform a variety of general classroom assistance duties.
Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Instructional Aide II Sign Language Interpreter
The above, plus:
Effectively apply specialized training, education, and work experience in
working with the problems and needs of students in Special Education
Programs.
Work independently with guidance.
Interpret academic subjects at appropriate instructional levels assigned.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the
required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the
knowledge and abilities would be:
Instructional Aide I – Sign Language Interpreter: Completion of specialized education courses in educational interpreting, psychology of deafness, education of the deaf, various sign languages and human/child development. Some experience in providing sign language interpreting for hearing impaired individuals.
Instructional Aide II – Sign Language Interpreter: One year of work experience comparable to that of a Instructional Aide I – Sign Language Interpreter with the completion of 24 semester units of childhood development, specialized sign language interpreting, or closely related courses. Up to 6 units of extracurricular courses sponsored by the Placer County Office of Education may be substituted for 6 of the required 24 units and passage of a Placer County Office of Education administered sign language proficiency evaluation.
Or
Three (3) years of work experience comparable to that of a Instructional Aide I – Sign Language Interpreter with the completion of 12 semester units of childhood development, specialized sign language interpreting, or closely related courses. Up to 3 units of extracurricular courses approved by the District may be substituted for 3 of the required 12 units and passage of a Placer County Office of Education administered sign language proficiency evaluation.
Or
Five (5) years of work experience comparable to that of a Instructional Aide I – Sign Language Interpreter with the passage of a Placer County Office of Education administered sign language proficiency evaluation.
Physical Requirements:
1.Mental acuity to: assist in the management of these programs, interpret and implement rules relating to these programs, make policy decision evaluate results, and make determinations relative to the effective performance of the tasks.
2.Facility to sit at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations for extended periods of time.
3.Facility to see and read, with or without vision aids, laws and codes, rules, policies and other printed matter and computer screens and print-outs.
4.Facility to hear and understand speech at normal room levels and to hear and understand speech on the telephone.
5.Manual dexterity to dial a telephone and enter data into a computer.
6.Facility to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal conversations, in training sessions and other meetings.
7.Facility to determine and differentiate colors.
8.Position requires ability associated with prolonged periods of heavy physical labor, requiring ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and move heavy objects or materials.
9.Lifting over 50 lbs. or carrying any object weighing over 25 lbs. on a continuous basis.
Special Requirements:
Fluency in American Sign Language and/or Manually Coded English system with ability and willingness to learn both.
Depending on work assignments, possession of a valid California Driver’s License issued by the Department of Motor vehicles may be required.
Salary : $22 - $27
